Letty Caldwell Shapley, 94 passed away December 9, 2015. Letty was born in Seattle, Washington on March 18, 1921 to Arthur J. and Marie C. Caldwell. She attended the University of Washington and in her Junior year after volunteering with the Red Cross (during WWII), she enlisted in the Marines. During her time in the Marines, she was assigned to the Marine Air Station in El Centro, California as “Air Traffic Control Tower Operator”.
In July 1945 Letty married “the love of her life” Anthony G. Shapley of Leland, Mississippi. They were married for 48 years. Anthony passed away in 1993. Letty and Anthony resided in the Greenville, Mississippi area for 50 years. Letty completed her formal education at Delta State University and earned her Masters Degree. She worked as an educator and librarian for the Greenville School District. Upon retirement from the School District, she worked at the Delta Community Mental Health Center.
She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Vestry, Chairman of the Outreach Committee and numerous other positions. She was a volunteer for many organizations, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and Mississippi Professional Educators.
In 2000 Letty moved to Atlanta, Georgia to be near her niece, Margaret Safford (Sid) and her great nephews John A. Lewis (Natalie) and Eric J. Lewis (Kristen), and their families. In addition to her Atlanta family, she is also survived by niece Cathy G. Harwood and great niece Lisa Harwood of Everett, Washington, Katy Dorgan (Mike), and Chris Cullison (Krystal) of Lynnwood, Washington, and numerous other nieces and nephews in Washington and Mississippi.
Letty loved spending time with family, and was like a mother and grandmother to Margaret and her children. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and strangers whenever needed. She loved to entertain, and was a fabulous cook and hosted many great parties. She also enjoyed travel, especially to the “beach” at Perdido Key, Florida.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington.

Growing up in Leland, MS two doors down the street from aunt Letty and uncle Anthony; I always enjoyed visiting at their home. I am sad to hear of her passing, I will always remember her and she gave me very special Christmas gifts and I still have all of them.
