Mrs. Mary Taylor Lawrence, age 81, of Whitesburg, passed away April 27, 2020.
Mary was born on December 19, 1938 in Colquitt, Georgia to the late Grady Ezekiel Taylor and Beulah Flemming Taylor. She spent her childhood in the small farming community alongside her three older sisters. Mary attended Miller County High School where she was an exceptional basketball player for the girls’ team. Mary was such a skilled player that her coach gifted her a basketball goal. She spent many free afternoons shooting hoops in that goal on the dirt yard by her home. She became an All-State player and set the school’s record for most points scored during a single game, which she still holds today.
After high school, Mary continued her studies at Young Harris College. She went on to work for the Senior Vice President of the Trust Company of Georgia, where she was loved and admired by her supervisors and coworkers alike. She mastered the art of shorthand and took dictation incredibly well for important business meetings. Mary spent a wonderful 18 years at the bank.
In 1962, Mary was wed to Dennis Lawrence. The couple settled in East Point for a time until moving to Morrow, where they lived for about ten years. Mary became a mother to three beloved daughters. While raising her children, she also spent time raising hogs and cows on her family farm. Moreover, she kept up the apple orchard and produce house which were part of the farm. In the early 1980s, Mary began another career as a real estate agent. She sold properties at Panama City Beach where she lived for a time. Mary returned to Georgia where she moved into her sweet cottage on the family farm to resume her farming work. She was a true entrepreneur who worked every day of her life until her eventual retirement.
Mary cherished her quiet life of retirement. She enjoyed read
ing, crocheting and working on puzzles. She especially loved watching sunsets from the farm. She was vibrant and pretty. She had an infectious laughter. She played the piano beautifully. Mary never spoke an unkind word about anyone. She was a born-again Christian. She was full of faith and prayed continuously. Mary was a longtime member of
Midway Macedonia Church. She was giving and loving. Mary was a terrific sister and aunt. She was a supportive mother who taught her daughters how to forgive. She was endlessly encouraging and hopeful. She was a loving Mamie to her grandchildren. Memories of Mary will be cherished by her beloved family members.
Along with her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter: Denise Lawrence Oxenford; grandson: Blake Tolleson; sisters: Nelle Taylor Kinney and Doris Taylor Palmer. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy Lawrence Tolleson and Robert Tolleson, Kelly Lawrence Cooley and Scott Cooley, all of Whitesburg; grandchildren: Brooke Tolleson, Michael Adams and Christopher Adams; great-grandchildren: Law Tolleson, Callie June Adams and Christopher Adams, Jr.; sister and brother-in-law: Ruth Taylor Tully and Bobby Tully of Colquitt; niece and nephews: Belinda Tully, Wynelle Kinney Cutchen (Bill Cutchen) and Arlene Kinney Clark, all of Colquitt; nephew and best friend: Bobby (Bubba) Tully, Jr. of Colquitt; several great nieces and nephews whom she loved.
