Herman S. McMickens, 63, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on August 1, 2020.
A candlelight vigil was held at his apartment residence on Sunday, August 9, 2020 from 6 pm to 7 pm.
Mr. McMickens was born March 10, 1957 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Mr. McMickens was truly an awesome gentleman with a passion for serving gourmet soul food. He had a heart for children and served children in the state of Georgia for over 30 years. He loved jazz, gourmet food, top shelf adult beverages, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his mother Rosa Hardin of Winston Salem, North Carolina, his father Daniel McMickens of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and his beloved son Garrett Coleman of Columbus,Georgia.
Survivors include his brother Daniel McMickens of Winston Salem, North Carolina, his daughter Donna Lamar-Russell (Tony) of Columbus, Georgia, his son, Nathaniel Williams of Columbus, Georgia, his grandson Darius Lamar (Shatavia) and a host of beloved brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and friends.

He was more than a friend, he was a true person that made you feel special. But if you crossed him in any way he let you know about it !
Our last deep conversation was how much he was admired and cared about. I remember his tears and mine as he talked about how touched he was by the outpouring of gratitude. It was not just gratitude but LOVE. Goodbye dear friend!

I just found out about Mr. McMicken’s passing a few minutes ago. I am so sorry for this loss! He was my neighbor at Dinglewood Apartments for four years. He was such a wonderful neighbor and friend. On my first morning at the apartment, he made breakfast and brought it over to me. He was a classy guy and a true friend! He is missed very much by anyone who was lucky enough to know, him. Mc was my best friend, It’s hard to believe it has been a year since his tragic passing. His zest for life and giving nature to family and friends was nothing short of amazing! He had many admirable qualities, and a pinchet for keeping things real, even when people danced around the truth, Mc had a way to snap reality back into focus, sometimes with humor sometimes with a directness southerners veer away from. Mc is the friend that you could always count on + he had a way of anticipating the needs of others.. I miss my friend, his laughter, wit, caring spirit, wonderful cooking and mixing skills. Herman and I were friends when we worked together in NYC back in 1976. We were both about 19 at the time, he was only a few months older than me (back when being older was a good thing) and he liked to remind me of that. There was always fun when Herman was around…he was a crazy kid (in a good way)…an all around good guy…hard worker and had a wicked sense of humor. I have a few pics of those days and from time to time I look at them . I always wondered what happened to Herman over the years and somehow life got in the way and I never got around to finding him. I just today realized that I could search for him on the internet and I found him in minutes. I was very saddened to find out it was too late and I’m kicking myself for not searching for him sooner. He was into food and cooking even way back then before we knew anything about “foodies”. At the time he loved the song “Sarah Smile ” by Hall and Oates which was popular on the radio. I had imagined that we’d be able to reconnect all these years later now that we’re both older and we’d be able to swap war stories. It sounds like he was well loved and respected and that makes me feel a lot better. RIP Herman…thanks for the fun times. -Rick
