Henry Douglas (Doug) Jones, Sr., age 96, of Suwanee, GA, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. He will be remembered for his love of family, selfless generosity, crazy sense of humor, and fanatic support of the Georgia Bulldogs.

On March 18, 1926, he was born to Evon Victor Jones and Nell Page Jones in St. Louis, MO. He grew up in Jackson, MS, and graduated from Central High School in 1944. At 18 years old, he joined the US Navy and proudly served his country during World War II. After the war, he attended Ole Miss, was a member of SAE Fraternity, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He worked mostly in Sales and retired as a Regional Manager from Chesebrough-Ponds USA, Inc.

In 1954, he married a beautiful small-town girl from Durant, MS, Miss Carease Truitt. Soon after having their first child, Doug Jr., they moved to Atlanta where daughters, Jody, Melanie and Allyson were born. He was a devoted father and grandfather who always made time to spoil his children and grandchildren.

He may have been a “Rebel” (Ole Miss), but he became a die-hard “Dawg” since all three daughters graduated from UGA. He told many that his initials ” H.D.” stood for “Hunker Down”. He was an avid tennis player with a wicked slice. He enjoyed working as a tennis umpire with APTUA and serving as Vice President of the Gwinnett Senior Golden Games.

He was an active member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where he and Carease were regular volunteers in the nursery. In 1993, they moved to Suwanee to be closer to their grandchildren. They transferred their membership to First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville where he enjoyed serving as an usher. He loved helping others and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Summer Lunch Program.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Evon Jones, Sr. and Nell Jones Anderson, and his brother, Evon Jones, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carease; his four children, Doug Jones Jr. and his wife Teresa of Lawrenceville, GA, Jody Jones of Suwanee, GA, Melanie Piefke and her husband Steve of Lawrenceville, GA, and Allyson Sims and her husband Erik of Smyrna, GA; four grandchildren, Taylor and Jake Piefke, Aubrey and Amelia Sims; and three nephews, T.J., Trey and Ted Jones.

On Thursday, October 13, 2022, the family will receive friends at 2:00pm in the Welcome Center and a Celebration of Life Service will follow at 3:00pm in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville, 395 West Crogan Street. A private interment will be at Gwinnett Memorial Park in Lawrenceville.
