Vernon Harry Oberg passed peacefully in his home on June 18, 2024, surrounded by his daughter and son-in-law, Vera and Angelo Oberg-Pineda with his beloved pets: Obie Wan Kenobi, Trooper, Darthy Vader, and Yoda. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Amelia Oberg, his grandchildren Richard Sharp, Paul LaBounty Abigail LaBounty Jakob Oberg Sophia Oberg, family Anita and Tony Sanders, and nieces and nephews in the U.S.A. and Philippines.
Vernon was born on August 13, 1945, in McCook, Nebraska to Carl Eugene and Helen Elizabeth Davis Oberg. He was preceded by his brother Donald Eugene Oberg, his sister Carlana M. Morphis, parents, and grandparents. Vernon has many nicknames from the people he loved: Vern by his siblings, Obie by his friends, Uncle Vern by his many nieces and nephews, Dad and Pawpaw by his kids.
Vernon grew up on a farm in Nebraska for most of his young life. After high school, he lived with his brother and guardian, Don. Vernon joined the United States Air Force in 1964, where he utilized his skills in information technology and data processing. Following his time in the Air Force, Vernon worked in technology, including for companies such as IBM and NASA. He also founded and ran two IT companies shortly in the Philippines: AmerSea and PhilAmerican. One of his favorite hobbies included researching software development and in his later years, simply “working on [his] laptop.”
Vernon moved to the Philippines with his family in 2004. Shortly after his ex-wife and daughter returned to the U.S. Vernon also returned to the United States. He later moved from Florida to Georgia to be close to his daughter and regularly visited the Department of Veterans Affairs for healthcare and recreation. More recently, he attended Grace New Hope Church and was a member of Operation Not Forgotten/Code Blue.
His passions and hobbies include reading military fiction books, watching documentaries, playing Texas Hold em or trivia, telling stories about his upbringing and two children as well as spending time with his daughter and son-in-law who lived with and cared for him. Vernon is loved by friends and family for his lively spirit, love for storytelling, welcoming and kind demeanor, and unique laugh. His greatest joy in life was physically walking his daughter down the aisle and holding his grandchildren, two personal goals which he achieved in his lifetime.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the extraordinary efforts throughout the years by numerous caregivers, Samia Tahil, RN, his care team at the VA Home Based Primary Care, and doctors, nurses, and staff of Northeast Georgia Hospital-Braselton.

Bob Thompson says
Vernon was instrumental in helping me through the paperwork and red tape of immigrating my wife from the Philippines, since he had been through the process himself. Over the years he has been a friend of the family, has visited us on several occasions and was always pleasant and fun to be with. I was deeply saddened to hear the news of his passing, and my prayers are with his family and loved ones.
