Robert “Bob” Lester Wallis passed from this life on April 30th, 2024. Bob was born in Albany, Georgia to parents James Edward “Jim Ed” Wallis and Francis Mary (Gilbert) Wallis. He grew up alongside brothers; James Edwin, and Joseph Gilbert.
Bob attended Albany High School and then enlisted in the Peace Corps. Upon his return, he obtained his teaching degree from Georgia Tech University. He spent over 30 years sharing his love of mathematics teaching at Milton High School. He touched the lives of many students throughout his life. Some notable quotes from former students include; “The math department at Milton High School was most notable for one man… Bob Wallis.” “What he wanted from us was 100% focus, 100% commitment, and 100% effort to learn what he was trying to teach us. Nothing more, nothing less.” He was known as a committed, passionate teacher, and some students say, “he created anxiety among generations of high school math students.”
Bob led the Milton High School Varsity Math Team to the State Championships in 2002-2003. He cherished his ring and key chain marking the triumph. Bob was truly a forever learner. He had a large collection of books that he moved with him to his senior living facility in Fayetteville.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; Francis Mary Gilbert (Wallis) and James Edward “Jim Ed” Wallis: brothers: James Edwin and Joseph Gilbert. He is survived by his nieces: Jana Earnest and Tina Scully and their families.
Memories of Bob have been shared by his nieces, Jana and Tina from their childhood. Although they did not inherit his love for math, Tina recalls as a child Bob was quick to come over and help with math homework when she was growing up. A very private man whom much regard as a loaner, Bob did seem to enjoy an occasional holiday celebration with family. He was a very generous gift giver to his youngest grand niece, Grace, always remembering to send a card or a gift to help develop her “math mind.” Bob will be remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.
The Wallis family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation-Fayetteville.
