Janis Lee Day was born in Columbus, GA on November 14,1955, and died on February 2, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Verbie Day. She is survived by her sister, Susan (Park) Simpson; nieces, Becky Braswell, Katie (Josh) Hedges, Jenny (Jared) Thacker; great nieces and nephews, Cristina and Emma Mattocks, Angela and Sara Hall, Jackson, Mary, Abby, Jordan and Joey Hedges.
Born three months early at just three pounds, the odds were against her from the start. However, she proved that she was a fighter, and after three months in the hospital, she finally went home. A year and a half later, she was stricken with polio, paralyzing her legs. Being an overcomer, she didn’t let that stop her. She learned to walk on crutches at an early age, rode a modified tricycle, and even climbed trees with the help of a friend. She got her driver’s license using hand controls, and later purchased her own home, which became “Grand Central Station” for her family every weekend.
After graduating from Columbus College she worked for Camera One developing a lifelong love for pictures. She worked for the City of Columbus for 35 years, first as a computer programmer, and later as a graphic designer in the Print Shop.
Never the victim, Janis lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed swimming and music, especially playing the guitar. She was a very active member at Epworth United Methodist Church for over 55 years. She loved working on her computer and restoring photos, and was completely obsessed with her dogs!
Janis leaves behind a witness of faith, joy and perseverance. For the first time in 67 years, she is whole and healed! We can’t wait to see her again!
