March 14, 1947-February 9, 2025
Richard “Mallory” Barnes of Dacula, Georgia passed away on February 9, 2025. Mallory was the first of four sons born to James Alva and Emmagreen Barnes. He was born on March 14, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Memphis, his Master’s Degree from Georgia State University, and his Law Degree from Mercer University. He was a retired member of the Georgia Bar Association at the time of his passing.
Mallory was preceded in death by his parents: James Alva and Emmagreen Barnes, and his brothers Jim and Jonathan Barnes. He is survived by his beloved wife Alice, his children; Anne Marie (Troy), Elizabeth, and Stuart (Hannah), and four grandchildren; Brandon (Destiny), Tyler, Connor, and Savannah. He is also survived by his younger brother Jeff.
In his younger days, he was active in The Boy Scouts of America, achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout in 1962. The 1960’s was the golden era for him. He took part in the hippie movement, the civil rights movement, and the Vietnam War demonstrations. He loved 60’s music and stayed in touch with many of his friends from that era until late in life. Mallory was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and being near the ocean. With a major in English and Creative Writing, he was published at Perimeter College, Agnes Scott College, and The University of Memphis. Later in life he enjoyed legal writing and researching motions and appellate cases.
As a defense attorney, Mallory represented indigent clients, served as a mediator for juvenile defendants, and handled personal injury and wrongful death cases. He also served as a counselor in various civil cases. As an attorney he had a winsome way of persuasion, often accompanied by a laid back, bottomless humor, and both qualities often resulted in successful pleas.
Mallory was a devoted husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. He was proud of his children, always encouraging and supporting them. He was a staunch believer in education, as well as an avid reader with an extensive library full of books on physical and spiritual self-improvement. He also loved to travel abroad, often accompanied by his children, to learn about different cultures and languages.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Unity Atlanta Church in Peachtree Corners, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta.
