Victoria Hutcheson Bardis – June 14, 1947-June 6, 2025
A devout Christian, steadfast mother, and lifelong teacher, Victoria (“Vicki”) Hutcheson Bardis was a gentle person and a kind soul who cared deeply for her friends, loved ones, and the occasional stranger. To know her was to know love and kindness. She was generous with handing out “I love you’s” and prayers.
Victoria passed away on June 6, 2025 at home with family. Victoria was born in Columbus, Ga., and as an Army brat she spent her formative years living in Columbus; Phenix City, Ala.; Atlanta; Hanover and Stuttgart in Germany; Framingham, Mass. outside of Boston; Fayetteville, N.C. and Manila in the Philippines. She attended Central High School in Phenix City and graduated from Fayetteville High School in Fayetteville, N.C. She graduated from Agnes Scott College (‘69) in Decatur, Ga. where she majored in German and studied education, biology and theatre.
After graduating she worked at the Dartmouth College Library in Hanover, N.H. Later she was a preschool teacher, a stay at home mom, a Girl Scout troop leader, and a volunteer at church. In adulthood, she lived in Fort Campbell, Ky.; Hanover, N.H.; Greensboro, N.C.; Pittsburgh; Dallas; and Atlanta several times until settling there in 1978 until 2020. She lived in Columbus, Ga. the last five years of her life.
While in college, Victoria taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to children in the Philippines. Later in life, she taught ESL to children from Cambodia as a volunteer at her local elementary school. She went on to spend 20 years teaching ESL in Clarkston, Ga. to adult refugees from all over the world.
Victoria raised three children, Stephanie Bardis Turney, Christy Bardis Petterson, and David Bardis. As a mother, she encouraged her children to pursue their natural talents, work hard, show love and kindness to others, and to give thanks to God for this blessing we call life. In her final years, Victoria battled cancer, but not without a strong fight which lasted several years in stage 4, with two major surgeries, chemo- and immunotherapy. All the while, she expressed joy in the simple things we may all take for granted: the sunshine, a bird sighting, conversation with loved ones, and a good cup of coffee.
Victoria is survived by her three children, their spouses, and their children: Stephanie and David Turney (Christopher, Alexandra, and Gregory), Christy and Davis Petterson (Emmett), and David and Joanna Bardis (Adley and Andrew). She is also survived by her brother Bill Hutcheson and her brother Robert and his wife Celeste Hutcheson, as well as her sister-in-law Darlene Hutcheson (widow of her brother Henry), her aunt Ann Roberts, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Victoria loved her family.
