Hobson Norris, Jr., 95, of Sharpsburg, GA, passed away on June 16, 2025.
Hobson was born on September 23, 1929, in Monroe, LA to Hobson Sr and Narvelle (Dickerson) Norris. He grew up in Monroe alongside his parents and his younger brother Thomas Patrick. Sonny Boy, as he was lovingly known to his family, earned his high school diploma in 1947 at West Monroe High School and helped his father start a syrup manufacturing company, which remains in operation to this day. He went on to attend Tulane University, but after one semester, he transferred to a Radio Engineering School in Washington D.C.
While studying engineering in Washington D.C., Hop was staying at a boarding house run by a beautiful young lady named Betty. Hop was smitten with her and her big, beautiful smile. He lovingly courted Betty, as he knew right away that she was the one. He referred to her as his one, his only, and his everything. Hobson married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) on March 12, 1955. The couple had three lovely daughters and spent 63 years together, sharing a lifetime of love, laughter, and memorable moments.
In 1954, Hop, as he preferred to be called, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Physics from Northeast Louisiana University. He and Betty decided to make the move to Dallas, TX in 1965 and put down roots to raise their girls. Hobson and Betty made Farmers Branch, TX their happy home. In 1973, he went to South Africa with his company, taking Betty and the girls along with him. Hobson had a long and fruitful career with Fischback & Moore Electrical Group until his retirement in the 1990s. When the job was complete, the family went home to Farmers Branch, where he and Betty stayed until her passing in 2018. Hop decided in 2020 it was time to say goodbye to Texas and moved to Sharpsburg, GA, and in with his daughter, Linda, and her husband, Pat.
Hobson was an avid woodworker. He had a home woodshop where he crafted bookshelves, photo frames, cabinetry, and many other custom items. He enjoyed helping his neighbors with any project they required. He found great satisfaction and solace in creating such beautiful works of art. He was also a firm believer in the educational value of travel. In addition to South Africa, Hop took his family to visit Zimbabwe, Botswana, Germany, Greece, Israel, and a great deal of the United States.
Hop will be remembered by those who loved him as a devoted husband to Betty, a loving father to his three girls, and a doting grandfather to his two grandchildren.
Mr. Norris was preceded in death by his parents: Hobson Norris, Sr. and Narvelle (Dickerson) Norris; his wife: Betty (Powell) Norris; and his brother: Thomas Patrick Norris. He is survived by his daughters: Elizabeth Norris of Oklahoma City, OK, Carol Brown of Lubbock, TX, and Linda Oren of Sharpsburg, GA; and his grandchildren: Andrea Oren of Las Vegas, NV and Evan Oren also of Las Vegas, NV.
Hobson’s life will be celebrated with family at a private service at a later date at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Association in Mr. Norris’ memory.

We were so blessed by his creativity! He made us beautiful oak bookshelves to go on either side of the fireplace. They were so impressive. At our next house he helped us w/ kitchen cabinet scalloped valance pieces. Again, it was so perfect! His woodworking skills were just amazing. We enjoyed working w him and knew him because he worked w my dad. We were so sorry to hear that he passed away and I know my Dad really enjoyed knowing him for so long.
