Robert William Aylward, 74, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away on September 14, 2025, after a courageous 13-year battle with throat cancer.
Born on August 27, 1951, in San Francisco, Robert was a lifelong marksman, beginning in his youth through YMCA and NRA programs. He went on to become a 4-time All-American and 1971 National Collegiate Rifle Champion at Tennessee Tech University, where he graduated in 1973 as a Distinguished Military Graduate.
Robert served honorably in the U.S. Army for two decades, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1993. He continued serving another 30 years as a GS Civilian at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), dedicating over 51 years to federal service. He competed and led teams in international shooting events, including the Pan American Games and World Championships. He was instrumental in shaping U.S. competitive shooting.
Among many honors, he was inducted into the USAMU International Rifle Hall of Fame, USAMU Hall of Fame, and Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit and Distinguished International Shooter Badge.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife Jennie, six children, ten grandchildren, his 3 siblings, and many dear friends and teammates. He was a devoted Christian and took comfort in his faith.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 18 at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church on Whitesville Road in Columbus, GA.
Georgia Cremation-Columbus is assisting the family with the arrangements.
