Josephine M. Smart, 96, of Columbus, passed away on August 25, 2026.

Born on September 25, 1929, in Utica, New York, Josephine graduated from Proctor High School in Utica. She held many jobs over the years, working for General Electric, Clinton Road School in New Hartford, and later spent many years with The Hartford Insurance Company, from which she eventually retired.  A dedicated mother who worked hard to support her family, Josephine was an avid golfer and bowler. She enjoyed spending time with her family, close friends and her dog Addie, and deeply appreciated the heartfelt care given to her later in life by her friends Rebecca and Katherine. A devoted Catholic, she belonged to St. Thomas the Apostle Church and St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford, and later to St. Anne Catholic Church in Columbus.

Josephine is survived by her five children, Cynthia, David, Dory, Valerie, and Gordon; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Donald Smart, and by several of her siblings.  A private Catholic burial service will be held at a later date at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Clinton, New York.
