February 1939 – August 2024
Arthur Lee Crumbley Jr., a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in McDonough, Ga., after a short battle with non-small cell lung cancer. Born in Georgia, to Elizabeth Crumbley and Arthur Crumbley Sr., Arthur was a well-respected Southern gentleman who spent his life dedicated to his family, his community, and his country.
Arthur earned his GED before proudly serving in the Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Navy. He continued his commitment to public service as a City of Atlanta firefighter, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant and acting captain, following in the footsteps of his father, who served as a fire inspector for the city. After his time with the fire department, Arthur embarked on a second career with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in the Environmental Protection Division.
Arthur’s love for his family was evident in his active participation in his children’s lives, often coaching their soccer teams and traveling to watch them play at the collegiate level. After retiring from two successful careers, Arthur enjoyed spending his time traveling, volunteering at Callaway Gardens, and being a member of the chase crew for hot air balloons throughout the Southeast. For decades, dinner at the Mexican restaurant with family and friends was a weekly highlight.
In his quiet moments, Arthur found joy in reading books and watching television, especially Westerns, Turner Classic Movies, news, soccer, and UGA football games.
Arthur is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, and their children: Chris Lane (Chuck), Craig (Cindy), and Michael (Rachel). He also leaves behind four grandsons, Justin (Kayla) Lane, Steven Lane, Matthew Crumbley, and Jacob Crumbley, as well as two great-grandsons, Rhett Lane and Colt Lane.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Giving Hands with Grace for their compassionate care and support during Arthur’s final days. The family will hold a private memorial event. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation to support current and future fire department personnel.
The Crumbley family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation-Fayetteville.
