Barry Clayton Sutherland was born March 31, 1949 in Liberty, South Carolina to the late Fred Belvin Sutherland and Dorothy Motte Sutherland. Growing up, Barry was always tinkering with cars and loved rebuilding classic cars and hotrods. His last project was a labor of love, restoring his 1966 Ford Mustang named “Baby Doll.” Barry always enjoyed watching NASCAR, cheering on the Atlanta Braves and playing poker. As a young child, the male role models in his life instilled a deep love for the sport of golf. This love was later passed on to his sons and they often enjoyed their adventures on the golf course.
Mr. Sutherland was dedicated to providing his family. Barry retired from Krystal after 28 years of service, having worked his way up from the very bottom of the food chain to eventually serving as a District Manager. While raising his boys, the doors were always open to the neighborhood children and many of them considered the Sutherland house to be their “home away from home”. Mr. Sutherland passed away April 7, 2017 at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia.
Barry was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Beverly Sutherland. Survivors include his sons, Ben (Amanda) Sutherland, Brent (Kelley) Sutherland, and Buddy (Nichole) Sutherland all of Columbus, Georgia; grandchildren, Abigail, Savannah, Aiden, Hayden, Charlotte, Ashton and Averly; brother, Joe Freddie (Laura Marie) Sutherland of Dawsonville, Georgia; and nieces and nephews, Jaime (Mike) Cooke and Tracy (Lorraine) Sutherland all of Atlanta, Georgia.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday April 15, 3:00 p.m. at St. Peter United Methodist Church, 6507 Moon Road, Columbus, Ga 31909.
The family kindly requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial contributions be made to the Children’s Miracle Network, https://childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/donate/.

The Sutherland house was definitely my home away from home. We wish the best for the family and for strength and peace in the days to come.

Yes, home away from home pretty much sums up the Sutherland household back in the day. We all felt like we were part of the family because that’s how Barry and the Sutherlands treated us! As one of their own. He is and will continue to be greatly missed.
RIP Mr Sutherland and I pray God’s loving hand upon everyone in his family.

May God forgive Barry of his sins and take him into His loving arms. I pray for comfort for the family and friends; knowing that he has been reunited with his beloved Beverly. He will live on forever in each and everyone’s heart.

Barry was my best friend in life. At Berry College, where I first met Barry on 1969, he taught me how to spend money, have a good time, and dance the night away. He was not afraid of the way I drove and we spent many hours on road trips singing along to the radio. His Beverly and their three boys and grandchildren were his pride and joy. I pray he is in a place where there are no green fees and an oval track that he can drive as fast as he wants in the car of his dream, Baby Doll. I will miss my best friend and think of him each time I see a sunset. Yes, he will live on forever in each and everyone’s heart that he touched. Adios, Amigo!

Barry was an old friend of mine from Berry College where he was a rising senior when I came in as a freshman. He and his friend, Dan Huff, took me under their wings and taught me a great deal about being on my own. Barry actually taught me how to make a long distance phone call which I had never been allowed to do at home. He also introduced to that Southern college dorm delicacy, fried baloney sandwiches. Anyone who was around Barry knew he was half crazy and proud of it. He told me the story of climbing a flagpole on a bet in high school. He got to the top and the pole fell down, fracturing one of his arms so badly that it required pins. He was also one of the most honorable people I have ever known. He never forgot a promise nor a debt. He was too fast to live and too young to die. Even though I had not seen him in over 40 years, I am saddened by his passing. He is one of my most unforgettable characters.
