Mrs. Brenda Downs Yawn, 72, passed Friday, February 5, 2021 at Columbus Piedmont Hospital after a long illness. She resided in Smiths, AL for over 30 years.
She retired from Aflac in 2013 after 31 years of service in Security and Policy Services.
She was born in Phenix City, Alabama on December 5, 1948. She was the daughter of the late John B and Betty Downs of Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Charles Yawn and her grand daughter Christian Brooke Webb. Survivors include her brother, Benny Downs of Columbus, GA; daughter, Sherry Phillips Whittington and her husband Dj of Smiths, AL; son, Terry Phillips and his wife, Libby of Washington, DC; stepdaughter, Dawn Yawn Harmon and her husband Darin of Columbus, GA; stepdaughter, Alesha Yawn of Smiths, AL; and stepson, Wesley C. Yawn and his wife Laura of Kentucky. She was blessed with twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and one niece and two nephews and many cousins.
Her golden years were full of holiday family gatherings, plenty of grandchildren running through the home, and delicious home cooking. Brenda loved “tending to everybody,” going to Casinos with her late husband and brother, and fishing with grandchildren. Often you would find Brenda engaged in college football on Saturdays, Nascar on Sundays; keeping up with the best of us on scores and wins, mostly for Auburn. Brenda had a competitive streak when it came to playing video games with her greatgrandchildren over the computer. Her family will always cherish the beautiful, crocheted baby gifts, wedding blankets, Christmas ornaments, and keepsakes that she worked effortlessly on over the years. Brenda often said that she has had the time of her life and would not change a minute of it.
Due to Covid restrictions, there will not be a memorial service for Brenda at this time, however, there will be a remembrance service scheduled at a future date. The family expresses sincere gratitude for the prayers and support from all our communities over the past few months.
The family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation, 7500 Veterans Parkway, Suite A, Columbus, Georgia 31909, 706-577-0055. The family invites you to leave a condolence or share a fond memory of Mrs. Brenda below.

Mama, I love you and I miss you and being here without you is breaking my heart. I know I’ll be okay because you taught me to be strong but it’s going to take some time. I miss your smile in the mornings, adding to my honey-do lists between naps, taking our Pokemon drives and everything. This world is not the same without you here. You are the best Mom. You are my hero. You are my heart. You’ve been my whole world. Thank you for a lifetime of love, smiles, memories, adventures. Thank you for everything you sacrificed and did just to get me grown. I love you oh so much. I will miss you until the day I get to see you again. Mom, maybe you can ask God to let me know that you’re okay now. I think maybe that will help me heal. I do know you’re okay because you are with God but just to see you smile again might ease this pain. I love you Mama. Have fun hanging out with Christi and Bobby but please be waiting at the gate when it’s my time to get there.
