David James Ureda, 67, of Duluth Georgia passed peacefully surrounded by family, on the evening of April 29th. He was born July 23rd, 1955, to Eugene and Audrey Ureda.
Dave was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and, while growing up in Woodland Hills, California, developed a passion for airplanes and flying. He earned his private pilot’s license as a teenager, became a flight instructor, graduated from California State University at San Jose, and joined Delta Airlines at the age of 23. He cherished his career at Delta spanning 42 years, flying the 777 aircraft around the globe, and logging over thirty thousand flight hours. He will be remembered as a consummate professional and was proud to serve as Captain.
He will be most lovingly remembered for his dedication and passion for family, larger-than-life stories, and famously recognizable laugh. David took pride in facing life’s challenges positively and seized every opportunity to engage with people. He never missed a chance to improve a situation or a design. David lived his life under the guiding principles of the Golden Rule while using “common sense and good judgment.”
He is survived by his wife Pam; his daughter Amanda and her family Brent, Emma, Olivia, and Trevor; his son Davis and his family Missy and Camryn; and his twin sons Kevin and Nicholas. He will be forever loved and remembered. His strong legacy as a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather “Pops”, Brother, Son, and Friend will carry on forever.
A Celebration of Life will take place May 8th before Dave takes his final journey into outer space.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation for Johns Creek United Methodist Church in David’s honor.
Georgia Cremation in Duluth is assisting the family with end-of-life care arrangements.

May you rest in peace, Dave. Much love, “E” and Flora Riley

I’ve known Pam since I was 6 years old. I met Dave for the first time at his home in Pompano. He was so welcoming and took my whole family out on his boat. Since then he’s welcomed us as guests to his 2 homes in Atlanta and also took us to the airport to gave us a tour of the cockpit. He and Pam made us feel like family. They came up to Chicago for my daughters wedding and really enjoyed my husbands band, let’s say he was getting down!! They also came up here for my 60th surprise party. Dave always had a smile on his face and a great story to tell. He was blessed with a beautiful, loving wife, 4 great kids who he was so proud of, his grandchildren and a wonderful career. Heaven has gained an awesome man. We will miss you Dave.
David and Davis Rappe says
I had the honor and privilege to fly many international trips with Dave on the 777. Every time I saw his name on my schedule I would smile and my day would be a little brighter. When he spoke of his family, which he often did, his face would come alive with that huge smile. He never knew a stranger and was always the brightest spot on any trip. It’s hard to believe he’s gone, but I know that heaven will be an even better place because of his early arrival. He will be missed by all those that knew him.

My heart is heavy with sorrow as I learn of the passing of Mr. Dave, a treasured member of the Ureda family and practically a second father to me. He was a remarkable man and father – whose infectious smile, enthralling storytelling, and unwavering zest for life captivated all and filled my childhood with the most incredible memories. I will never forget the man and the family he created – and how they’ve helped me to become the person I am today.
Mr. Dave had a way of making everyone feel at home, and his love for life was contagious. His unyielding appreciation for even the simplest of pleasures, truly a cheeseburger in paradise. It was a testament to his unwavering ability to derive and spread joy with his contagious and warm soul.
As you mourn the loss of such a remarkable individual, please know that he touched countless lives with his charisma, kindness, and unbridled enthusiasm for life. His absence will be felt deeply, but his memory will live on through the many lives he has touched. I am honored to have made so many memories with him, and I am a better and richer person for him having been in my life.
Until we meet again, Mr. Dave. Cheeseburger.

He could not speak of his grandchildren without an ear to ear smile. And as you waited you knew another story was coming!
Our conversations were tough ones, Pam, and as Dave’s wife you expressed it so well this past week, saying I just don’t want to leave him.
Pam, you did it all because you cared so much. We love you, Gareth and Pat Walmsley

Marshall Warren says
Dave lived his Dream. I saw it happen. Many times all over the world we flew the skyes that he loved. We flew the longest flight in the longest distance flying airplane in the world. With four pilots on the long flights whenever I was making a big decision I would always look back to Dave on the jump seat when he wasn’t flying, for his confirmation as he always did me. Dave would nod his affirmation with a calm face and always clear eyes. We knew each other.
We flew the first ever flight for Delta Air Lines from Seoul South Korea to Minneapolis. When we had our pictures taken after the speeches Dave had the biggest smile he could ever have. He was beautiful.
My wife is named Pam also. Pam means sweetness or honey. My Pam and Dave’s Pam have met at Delta Meeting. Dave and I are so lucky to have our Pam’s. We send all of our love to Dave’s Pam. It would make him happy for me to say Dave’s Pam.
Thank you Dave for keeping me safe, being my family when my family was far away and Having fun always.
Love Marshall and Pam Warren

Norm Bourdua says
My deepest sympathy to Dave’s family. I had the privilege flying with him several times. Always a pleasure. He was that rare person everyone knew they would like withing ten seconds of meeting him. A story: In my career, I only once misread my schedule so badly that I didn’t realize I had a trip that day. Thank God for who I was paired up with! My phone rings, and the ID says “Dave Ureda.” Soon the words, “Where are you?” are spoken. Dave sets me scrambling to the airport, arriving about fifteen minutes past scheduled departure, of course he and the crew have everything ready to go and we’re off. What made Dave forever a hero in my life was that there was a reserve pilot in the lounge readily available to cover. The powers that be said they should go with that pilot for an on-time departure. I learned from one of the First Officers that Dave had told them, “Norm is about to get here, and we’re not leaving until he gets here.” He saved my me from having to return home without pay and having a major blot on my record. We arrived at our destination early and I never heard about it from any management. Of course, he did score free dinners! I will always have a warm place in my heart for Dave and pray for the privilege of flying with him again in the next life.
Des Quigley says
My deepest condolences to Pam and family. Dave was a pleasure to work with at Delta. We had many Joberg layovers together. Dave was so fun and he loved to tell stories about his family and the house at the lake! A proud grandpa.
He was a mentor to me and a true professional, always. He will be so deeply missed.

Bob and Bonnie Beerbower says
Dave and I go back aways. We went through 767 FO traing together along with Terry Hanson and Chet Ladd. I enjoyed his sarcastic sense of humor and he knew his stuff too. He and I traded stories from then on. When we flew together later on the 777 it was always a fun trip. We talked lots about flying and the airplane. Besides his stories he knew how to listen to stories too. Dave was very much one of the “good guys.” Pam, I’m going to miss him.
Ron Arnold says
I was flying with Captain Dave in my last 2 months before retiring at Delta.
Flying on the B777 was known as “Flying the best aircraft you never flew”.
It was not unusual for a pilot to get only 1 landing per month.
In crew brief, Dave insisted that I was to fly both legs of our trip!
It was a very special thing he did for me in the twilight of my career.
That was the kind of person Dave was.
He was a true Professional Pilot, he loved people and was a joy to be around.
There were always those stories…. and a continuous smile.
I will miss him.
TC Coon says
Pam and family, I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I had the great fortune of flying with him many times, over many years. It was always a pleasure to be around Dave, in the cockpit and on the layover. One of the nicest things that I observed was that on every trip, where ever we went, we ran into people that knew Dave and were happy to see him. That says a lot about the kind of person he was. I will miss his mischievous smile.

Dave and Linda Young says
Linda and I have fond memories of the early days in Highland Pointe. Playing tennis, softball, and hanging out at the pool. We will always remember Dave’s positive outlook, enthusiasm, and of course his infectious laugh. I’m glad we had the chance to reconnect up at the lake. It was also such a pleasure to be a crew member on Dave’s retirement flight. We told stories, laughed and had a great time flying together. Pam, our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

John and Sue Ureda
The emptiness you may feel in your heart, like me, is that left from the passing of Dave. He was a laughing, humorous and happy person, always looking forward and getting things done to get there. That empty space in your heart will heal. If you let it, it will be filled in by all the joy, love, and goodness that Dave created in his life and left for us to experience. Witness the beauty of his life.

I was a new hire 727 Engineer on one of my first trips in early 1986 and my FO was Dave Ureda. I vividly remember thinking what a nice, young( my age) guy he was and how enjoyable he made the trip with his positive attitude and sense of humor. Fast forward to our joint time on the 777 and it was the same. I have never heard a bad comment about Dave. He was the consummate Delta pilot. I know how much he will be missed. Our sincere condolences.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Dave. He will be missed by all. Dave had the gift that I could only hope to bottle and emulate. There were many conversations and experiences that I will cherish. Thank you for sharing him with the 777 family. Thanks for the memories. It was a true honor to call Dave my friend and the best Captain ever! Until we meet again…..
Foster Barnwell says
In 30 years as a Delta pilot, I was privileged to fly with many great pilots, but Dave stands out as one who also became a great friend.
Our friendship blossomed during many overnight 727 west coast flights that arrived in Atlanta around 6 am. That is a lot of time to fill and thanks to Dave we had no trouble filling it with great conversations. We both loved to brag on our children. One night after we had exhausted our favorite topic, we started talking about where we lived and discovered we lived just a few miles apart in Marietta That must not have been close enough, because we later lived in the same neighborhood.
Our friendship continued after I retired and Dave & Pam moved from Marietta.
One of my favorite memories was when Dave called to invite my wife, Laura, and I on a flight/layover he had to Barcelona. Pam also joined him on the flight, and the four of us made fantastic memories on that trip.
The world is a sadder place without Dave in it, but he will always be remembered as one of the best.
Trish Killian says
Dearest Pam and family , so sorry to hear about Daves passing. I only know you Pam 3 years but your love for Dave always shines through. It’s clear he was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.
Love Trish
Brian Lair says
Being paired with Dave Ureda on a Delta 777 trip always put a smile on my face. Simple as that. He was taken from his family and the rest of us who knew him wayyyyy too soon. I can only guess that God wanted to hear his stories and booming laugh directly in Heaven. Rest in Peace, Brother.
Rick Veley says
I had the privilege of knowing and flying with Dave numerous times throughout our careers. We were reasonably close in seniority with me being one of the Minkler + crowd that got hired in 1981. He was definitely one of the good guys and I truly enjoyed our time flying and laying over together. Even with the small amount of time that we had together Dave was always one to greet me with that classic smile of his and make me feel like a long lost friend. I knew that it would be an enjoyable trip as soon as I saw him.
There is a void now in the world and many folks that you don’t even know, like me, will feel the loss of such a genuine friend and good guy.
Rick and Jenny Staples says
Pam,
Our heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Like many others who were so fortunate to fly with Dave, it was my honor and privilege to spend time flying with him to all corners of the world. I always looked forward to trips with Dave as I knew not only would I get to fly with a professional and knowledgeable pilot, I’d also be in for lots of belly laughs and smiles to last the many miles we flew. I was one of the lucky ones who got to fly with Dave on his retirement flight. It was definitely a bittersweet trip for us all. We had a great time, but knew it would be his last time flying the 777. He set the standard for consummate aviator and was the best of humankind as well. We will remember his smile and laugh forever.
Bevy Blomquist says
I’ve been friends with Pammy and her brothers since I was 6 years old. We all attended Trinity Reformed Church in Deerfield beach, Florida.
As a 20 year old, Pam invited me to share her apartment with her, and we grew even closer as friends.
When Pam and Dave were newly married, Dave was my dental hygiene patient, and I’ll never forget laughing about the fact that he occasionally smoked a pipe.
In recent years, we’ve had opportunities to spend time together.
Dave was such a devoted husband and father, and dedicated to his life’s career as an Airline Captain.
Pammy, I’ll love you forever, and pray your heart is held by our precious Jesus.
Roger and Juanita Keranen says
Dear Pam and Family, it is with great sorrow to learn about Dave’s passing. He was a great man as well as an accomplished airline pilot.
If you were to do a google search for “professional airline pilot”, the result would be a
description and picture of Dave. He was always a pleasure to fly with to all the exotic
places situated over 14 hours or more from Atlanta. He will be missed by the 777
community who knew him so well and his friends on Lake Keowee. When we go for a sunset cruise we will toast to Dave for all the sunsets and sunrises he saw at 35,000 ft.
Robert Kluever says
Dear Pam and Family,
I always enjoyed flying with Dave, and so many nice reminiscences have been posted that there is nothing that I can say that has not been said. He was the best!
Libby Sumner says
Dear Pam and children,
I am saddened to hear about the loss of your husband and father. I pray that you can find peace in the days to come.
Katy Staples says
Pam and Family, I am so very, very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dave and your family were a constant happy encounter in our lives as we moved in next door and the children grew up. I don’t think I ever saw Dave without a smile on his face! The beautiful and respectful children you’ve raised and your strong marriage are a testament to what he valued most. Two cute memories are when he went through your grocery receipt Pam, and called you out on buying an expensive bottle of fruit juice at the grocery store for yourself…You and I had a quick laugh about the fact that “Mom” had to take care of herself a little. (I hope this brings a smile to your face, as Dave wasn’t wasteful and kept his eye on the bottom line :)..smile). It was just a funny little real moment, and cute at the time. I also remember he and I visiting in the cul-de-sac one day, and he was telling me about how he’d decided to take up yoga to keep himself limber as he began to age. I thought that was so impressive and different from any of the men I knew… I’m not sure why those two stories popped into my head, but I just wanted to possibly bring a quick smile. Anyone that knew Dave, I’m sure, knew how wonderful and happy he was. Above all, it was obvious he was proud of his family and happy with the life he had built with you Pam. I’m so very sorry. Katy
Sonny Rasar says
So sorry to hear. He was a true pleasure to fly with and a great layover buddy. He will be missed.
God Speed Dave and God Bless the Ureda family.
Michael Ureda says
The love for his family and passion for his career were the hallmarks of cousin’s life. I remember fondly flying with Dave in a little six seater over the Sierras when he let me take the controls. And he casually mentioned that “At this altitude we should probably have oxygen”. But the smile on his face reassured me that he had everything under control. He was always a joy to be around, and will be remembered with love.

I only knew of Dave for quite a while at Delta. He seemed to be a bigger than life figure. I assumed that the pilot chat about him was exaggerated as some pilots are prone to do. When I finally met Dave though I found that the stories of his training, his work ethic, his great sense of humor, and his love of flying, his pride in the company we worked for (i.e. Delta Air Lines) was not overstated at all. Dave was a one of a kind individual and I am so happy that I had a friendship with him albeit a brief one. Dave left quite a legacy with a beautiful wife and family. I believe that he has already heard those words that I long to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant”

To Pam & family, I am sorry for your loss of your husband & father, Dave. I pray he is at peace & resting his soul. I haven’t seen you lately, but I was there when you first met Dave & what a fun party time at the Kasolds. Now, I can see Dave & Rick up in heaven having happy hour & telling pilot stories. I wish you peace & fond memories to help you during this time.
Steve Kitson says
As fellow 777 Captains, I flew with Dave more than a few times over the years. He was a consummate professional in the cockpit and a wonderful traveling companion on the layovers. I have many fond memories of Dave. One of the best was a Christmas green slip when we took our families to Johannesburg, rented a car, and toured for two days.

Rest in Peace Dave. You were a wonderful Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Uncle & Friend. I will always remember your incredible hugs, your constant positivity and optimism and your smile. You always made me feel special. I will continue smile on my birthday thinking of you calling me one day early from Japan and other places around the globe to be the first to wish me Happy Birthday! You loved being a Delta pilot. I remember you telling the family about an older lady complaining about a bumpy flight, you replied “you should have seen the ones we missed”. You loved a good story and a good deal but more than anything you loved your family. You will be deeply missed. Where ever you are in the universe I know you’ll be giving my Audrey Ureda a huge Ureda hug. Thanks for the memories. Much Love.
Sharon Kasold says
My deepest sympathy to the entire Ureda family. So many memories and so much love. Dave and Pam met at the Kasold’s Halloween party. Pam and I were Delta wives and with that came joy and many memories that will always live on. How lucky I am to have known Dave and with so many wonderful condolences it is clear Dave left his smile with many.

Message to Dave: That picture of you is exactly the expression that I always saw when seeing you: Enthusiastic smile and a welcoming attitude. I did not know you as well as I would have wished but my life is better for having known you even that small measure. We shared the love of flying and that became your career. You were always joyful and enthusiastic and I know you were an excellent example for your children and entire family. That gift can never be taken away and is a legacy that is enviable.

We are so very sorry to hear about your family’s great loss. Pam, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. I flew with Dave briefly at Delta before he moved on to the 777. He was the type of Captain all enjoyed flying with. We also spent some time together up on Lake Keowee at the Tiki Hut. It was a joy and an honor to fly with him at Delta! I flew with him to Honolulu and enjoyed a Hawaiian sunset with him. With that being said, they say a sunset on earth is a sunrise in heaven. 🌅❤️

I first met Dave on the other side of the world on a layover in Johannesburg, South Africa. He approached me, introduced himself, and said “Don’t you have a place on Lake Keowee?” Thus began a wonderful friendship for the four of us…Dave, Pam, my wife, Mary-Ellen, and myself. We will always cherish our dinners and get togethers and, of course, Dave’s stories!
I would like to dedicate a beautiful poem, my favorite, to Dave’s memory. It is entitled “High flight” and was written by a young Royal Canadian Air Force pilot, John Gillespie Magee Jr., in September, 1941:
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew –
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
We will miss you Dave.

Pam and family,
I flew a fair amount with Dave on the B-777 during my last 5 years at Delta. What a pleasure he was to fly with! He was a consummate professional, yet “laid back” at the same time! He always had lots of good stories to tell, was always upbeat and positive.
I am so sorry for your loss–he was a great man and colleague.

Uncle Dave you have always been a big part in my life, my dreams and inspiration, I have always dreamed of being a pilot and a family man like you. I always looked up to you even though we didn’t get to spend a lot of time together but the time we did spend was very special to me, you left a lot of life memories that I will cherish forever. I love to fly and always remembered how you were a life long commercial pilot for Delta. I always dreamt to do the same when I grew up and still do. I thank you for all the long games of chess you played with me on the full size chest table in the basement. All the family trips to your house when I was younger. All the stories about flying, planes and your plans to build a small plane in the the hidden garage down by the basement. You have amazing children (all my cousins) who I remember as young, smart, strong, kind and playful in the little time I got to spend with them all. I wish we had all been closer and I was able to spend more time with all of you then I did but I will always appreciate every minute I did get and all the memories we had. Thank you for being at our wedding, meeting my family and taking the time to show me that I was a part of your family. I love you and I will never forget the time we spent together.
Love,
Jerry, Jess & Jaely

I had the privilege of flying with Dave on many 777 and 727 trips. He was a joy to fly with, a consummate professional and a great sense of humor. I am sorry for your loss. Rest easy Dave.

In 1965 my best friend in sixth grade, Mark Ureda, had a younger brother named Dave. Over the years I played lots of driveway basketball at the Ureda’s house with Mark, Dave and their cousin Gary. I was surprised when Dave showed up at the San Jose State Aero department in 1973, determined like me to be a commercial pilot. Determination and focus, that is what I remember about Dave, and his good nature, kindness, and warm smile. In late 1977 he called me to say there were flight engineer openings at Zantop Airline, where he was working. In early January of ’78 I was crashing on his couch going through flight engineer school and waiting to get an apartment. I couldn’t take the night flying, lack of sleep and unscheduled nature of Zantop, but Dave seemed to thrive and was soon flying the Convair 640. I have always been grateful for the experience Dave gave me with that call out of the blue. It changed the trajectory of my life. I left Zantop and was soon working as an aerospace engineer in San Diego. Shortly thereafter I heard Dave was hired by Delta. I was not surprised, they must have seen his determination and warm smile. Pam, I pray that your memories of Dave give you and your family some comfort in the years to come. The long list of condolences is quite a tribute to the special man Dave was.
Steve Lesniewski says
I flew with a lot of Captains at Delta. Don’t have much but praise for pretty much all of them. If I could hold up one hand, five fingers, and say “these are my favorites”, Dave would definitely be one of them. We flew together on the MD-88, 767-400, and 777. We would talk, tell stories, laugh the whole time , no matter how long the flight. I’m also a twin, so we had that craziness in common. I often had to explain how great twins were!! We just bought a lake house on Lake Keowee, and I was looking forward to hanging out with him. Alas, it was not to be. Pam, he always spoke highly of you. I hope your family can find peace as time goes by.
