Delia Julia Breaux Laird, age 93, of Gulfport, MS passed away August 3, 2020.
Mrs. Laird was born on September 11, 1926 to the late Jochen and Theresa Breaux. She was raised in Louisiana alongside her sister Janie. Mrs. Laird was Cajun (French, Italian) and grew up speaking French and English. In 1952, she was wed to Navy Chief Petty Officer Robert Laird. The couple moved frequently due to Mr. Laird’s military service the first ten years of their marriage. Upon Mr. Laird’s retirement, the couple settled in Gulfport, MS, where they raised their two children. Mrs. Laird called Gulfport her home for 56 years. In 2018, she relocated to Georgia to be closer to family. Mrs. Laird spent the remainder of her life in Newnan, Georgia.
Mrs. Laird was friendly and social. She never met a stranger. She especially enjoyed fishing, a good cup of coffee, long walks and bike rides. Mrs. Laird had a happy life full of good friends and many wonderful years raising her children and caring for her family. Mrs. Laird was an excellent cook. Her specialties were okra gumbo and fried chicken. These recipes weren’t written down, but in her memory and taught to her by her own mother. She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables grown in her husband’s garden. She had a knack for sewing and sewed many of her children’s clothing. Mrs. Laird’s fun and spunky spirit will be dearly missed by her loved ones.
Along with her parents, Mrs. Laird was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years: Robert Kenneth Laird; son: Robert “Keith” Laird; sister: Janie Scardill. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Janet and Chuck Gillen of Newnan, GA.
The Laird family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation, 1086 Hwy 54 West, Fayetteville. Messages of condolence may be left at www.GeorgiaCremation.com.
