Dianne Elizabeth Enslow (Gormlie)

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Dianne Enslow passed away on October 16 at the age of 90.  Dianne was born on December 10, 1935, in Melrose, Massachusetts to Lt. Col. George F. Gormlie, U.S. Army, and Dorothea Louise (Webber) Gormlie.  Dianne’s father was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, and when he was called to active duty during World War II, Dianne and her mother began the nomadic life of a service family.  A brother, George Frank, joined the family in 1948.

In 1953 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Dianne met her future husband Philip Harrison Enslow Jr., then a cadet at the United States Military Academy in West Point.  They became engaged in the summer of 1954, and married on June 8, 1955, the day after Phil graduated from West Point. They remained happily married for 67 years, until Phil’s passing in 2022.

Dianne’s nomadic service life continued, now as a proud military wife during Phil’s service in the U.S. Army, which included a deployment to Viet Nam in 1967-68, as well as time spent in locales from Fort Huachuca, Arizona to Washington, DC and London.  During this time, Dianne and Phil welcomed two beautiful girls into the family, Dorothea Bliss in 1958 and Dana Charlotte in 1962.  Phil also earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University while serving in the Army.

In 1975, Phil retired from the Army and moved the family to Atlanta, where he accepted a position as a professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Information and Computer Science.  The move from London to Georgia was a bit of a culture shock for Dianne, as she found out the very first day when she attempted to order a glass of wine on Sunday at a hotel near the Atlanta airport.  However, the family settled into their home near Stone Mountain, where Dianne took on the job of supporting her husband as a faculty wife.

Dianne embraced her role as Phil’s social director, during both his Army and Georgia Tech careers, hosting parties for his faculty peers, as well as neighborhood gatherings and other social groups such as the Georgia Tech Faculty Wives (now Women’s Club), where she served as president from 1983-84.  Dianne and Phil were long time members at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Stone Mountain, where she was a member of the Altar Guild.  Dianne loved to read, participating in many book clubs.  She also loved to cook, play tennis, host bridge and Mah Jongg parties with her friends, and travel.

Dianne and Phil loved to travel, and whether it was for one of his international conferences, a vacation with the family, or a trip with Phil’s fellow West Point alumni, they were fortunate to experience many different lands and cultures.  They often took their daughters Dottie and Dana on these trips, and after the daughters married, their spouses and children as well.

Dianne had three grandsons, and she dearly loved being their “Mimi.”  The families spent many happy days at Phil and Dianne’s condo on Hilton Head, as well as their beautiful home at Big Canoe, where the boys could swim, fish or just hang around.  Dianne and Phil rarely missed one of Philip and Tucker’s lacrosse games, and Dianne was always ready for a sword fight with young Coalter.

Dianne is predeceased by her parents, her husband Phil, and an infant daughter Dianne Elizabeth “DeDe”.  She is survived by her brother George Frank Gormlie, daughters Dorothea Bliss Enslow Putnal (Joseph) and Dana Charlotte Enslow Hammock; her beloved grandsons Philip James Hammock (Cacilia), Tucker Harrison Hammock, and Randall Coalter Putnal, who will dearly miss their Mimi; and three great-grandchildren.

The family would also like to express their sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the care givers at The Key who cared for both Phil and Dianne in the latter stages of their lives.

A funeral service will be held at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, 3110 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. on Tuesday, October 27 at noon, with a reception to follow immediately afterwards in Gable Hall.  At a later date she will be interred at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, alongside her husband Phil and daughter DeDe.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an animal rescue organization such as Furkids; or to a cause that is special to you.
