Dorothy Nero Moore

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Dorothy Nero Moore, lovingly known as Mama Dot, passed away peacefully at her home in Columbus, Georgia on October 19, 2025 surrounded by her granddaughters, at the age of 81. Born on June 24, 1944, in Church Point, Louisiana, Dorothy was the second of eleven children born to the late Theogene Nero Jr. and Mildred B. Nero.

Dorothy’s life was one of love, strength, and faith. She graduated from Holy Ghost Catholic School in Opelousas, Louisiana, and later pursued college studies with dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse. She worked at Ben Taub Hospital in Texas in patient registration, where her compassion and dedication touched many lives.

In the latter half of her life, Dorothy embraced her most cherished role — that of a homemaker and caregiver. She dedicated herself to helping raise her grandchildren, pouring the same love, wisdom, and patience into them that she shared throughout her life. Her home was a place of comfort, warmth, and the irresistible aroma of her famous cooking.

Throughout her life, Dorothy made her home in California, Texas, and Georgia. No matter where she was, her kitchen was always open, and her heart even more so. Known for her incredible cooking, her giving spirit, and her honest, straightforward nature, Mama Dot was always ready to feed a friend, comfort a neighbor, or lend a helping hand.

A devoted Christian and member of the Church of Christ, Dorothy lived her faith through action — serving others, sharing love, and standing strong through life’s challenges.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her three beloved children: Alfredia Nero, Joseph Moore, and Velma Moore. She was also preceded in death by parents, Theogene and Mildred B. Nero, and three of her siblings, Woodrow Nero, Catherine N. Holt and Madeline N. Braziel. Though her heart knew deep sorrow, she carried herself with grace and faith, finding strength in her love for God and her family.

She is survived by her cherished grandchildren: Carletta George, Jada Nero, Niketta Nero, and La’Ryiah Nero, along with her great-grandchildren; Winter, Blizzard, Remi, Hassin, Skye, Honesti, and Kanari.  Her remaining siblings are: Phillip Nero (Laura Jean), Charles Nero (Hisako), Zachary Nero (Cecilia), Robert Nero (Debra), Veronica True Image, Priscilla Nero and Jacqueline Savoy – along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and all who loved her dearly.

Mama Dot’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace and reunited with her children and loved ones who went before her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on — a reflection of the love, faith, and strength she shared so freely. The family rejoices knowing she has gone home to be with the Lord.

Rest in Peace Mama Dot 🕊️🤍
Mama Dot welcomed me into her home when I was just 16 years old. She fed me, cared for me, and loved me like I was her own child. She truly became like a grandmother to me — so full of love, warmth, and kindness. When I had nowhere to go, she opened her doors and her heart without hesitation, and I’ll never forget that. She had a way of making everyone feel special, like family, and she loved everyone she met. I’m forever grateful for the time I had with her and for all the love she poured into me.

Rest easy, Mama Dot — you’ll always hold a special place in my heart. 🌹❤️

    With love,
    Brianna

Mama Dot was a truly grateful woman. She gave you the honest truth. I lived with her and Fredia while she was pregnant with Lariyah. I was there for her birth. Mama Dot’s cooking was the best. She was always supporting to me. I love all of y’all. Be strong. They have your backs up in heaven. I’m here for y’all here.
