The Reverend Gene Waller Cheek Owens, age 83, a life-time resident of Atlanta, died on September 12, 2017.
Born on October 27, 1933, she was an ordained Episcopal deacon, serving the Diocese of Atlanta. She graduated from Bass High School and was active in many volunteer and civic organizations throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Mercer University of Atlanta and earned her certificate for Education Ministry from the University of the South. She served as associate director of the Mercer University Prison Program and as deacon at Emmaus House, and St. Bede’s and Holy Comforter Episcopal churches.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, J. Robert (Bob) Owens. Together they traveled, enjoying archeological digs.
She is survived by her three children, Lauree Hemke (Dale), Sam Hussey (Tim), and Marshall Cheek (Patty); four grandchildren and five great grandchildren; her step-son, Mark Owens (Linda); three sisters, Gaye Kitchen; Mimi Powell; and Lynn Harp (Olin) and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and reception will be held on Wednesday, September 27 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta 30308. A visitation will be held, on Tuesday, September 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Canterbury Court, community room, 3750 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta 30319. A private burial service will be held at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church.
The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church; Emmaus House, 1017 Hank Aaron Drive SW 30315; or Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 737 Woodland Ave, Atlanta, 30316.

Sorry to hear about Gene’s death. The last time that I saw her was at Skip’s funeral almost ten years ago. It was so nice of her to come. I will be thinking of you the 27th. Downtown Atlanta is past my driving range.
