Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

George R. Sabens May 19, 1925-May 20, 2025

George Sabens, long-time resident of Upatoi, GA, departed this life on May 20, 2025, achieving his goals of living to 100 and dying at his home, under the care of Columbus Hospice. A memorial service celebrating his life was held at Upatoi Community Church on May 27th at 3:00.

George was born in Colchester, VT on May 19, 1925 to the late Harold T. and Freda B. Sabens. He married his sweetheart, Frances B. Clark, in 1944 and they remained together for 76 years until her death.

He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years as a helicopter pilot, retiring as CWO4, after serving in World War II, Korea and two tours in Vietnam. Like most soldiers, he didn’t talk about the war itself, but he loved to talk about the helicopters he flew. It became a family joke that you didn’t mention helicopters when he and his son-in-law, Larry Taylor, (also a former Army helicopter pilot) were in the same room because that would start the long-winded tales of some of their exploits.

After retiring from the military, he taught Electronics at Jordan High School for many years. After retiring from that, he worked as a contractor for Muscogee County School District as a Computer Technician for a short time. His wife, Frances, often said it took him three tries to figure out how to retire.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife Frances; his son Duane C. Sabens; and his siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Sabens Taylor; his son, Stanley B. Sabens (Teresa); and his son, Gerald L. Sabens (Barbara); daughter-in-law, Sue Sabens; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
