In Loving Memory of Ingrid Pörtner Shields

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Ingrid Pörtner Shields passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 26, 1941 to Dr. Hermann Pörtner (father) and Irmgard Pörtner, geb. Mendorff (mother), in Enger, Germany, where she spent her childhood. She received the German equivalent of a Master’s degree from the University of Heidelberg and then immigrated to the United States with her husband and child.  Because her German education was not recognized in the United States at the time, Ingrid made the decision to enroll in school once again. She pursued and attained a Master’s of Library Science from East Carolina University, demonstrating her determination and commitment to advancing her career despite the challenges she faced.

Later Ingrid proudly obtained her U.S. citizenship, marking an important milestone in her life. She devoted many years to her professional career, ultimately retiring as an archivist for the State of Georgia.  Over the course of her career, Ingrid became widely recognized for her depth of archival expertise. She frequently shared her knowledge, delivering presentations to classes and community groups, and was valued for her commitment to preserving history and educating others.

Ingrid enjoyed learning and was not only fluent in her native German tongue but was also fluent in English, French, Latin, and Greek. She was quite talented in playing the piano and always had numerous books open on her table. She was a voracious reader and therefore well educated on a multitude of subjects, especially history.

She brought German traditions to her grandchildren, most notably the beloved tradition of the Christ Child.  Each year, during the four Saturday nights prior to Christmas, the Christ Child would fly into an open window and leave a small present tucked into a shoe.  Every year, the house was full of excited children as well as multiple shoes sitting in window sills. Ingrid loved sharing this tradition with her family and would carefully search for perfect gifts tailored to each grandchild. She would often begin this process months in advance.

Ingrid has followed her beloved grandson, Christopher Burch.  She is survived by her daughter, Adrienne (Mike) Drummond, granddaughter Katharine Burch, grandson Christopher (Erica) Drummond, grandson Matthew (Alanna) Drummond, sister Dr. med. Heike  (Harold) Haus, niece Monika (Dara) Torkzadeh  with their children Julius, Alexander, Maximillian and Katharina, nephew Dr. med. Arno (Yvonne) Haus with their children Sophie and David,,  and nephew Dr. med. Georg (Sandra) Haus with their children Annalena and Ferdinand.
Services will be held Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 11AM at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church Chapel, 175 E. Lanier, Fayetteville, GA 30214.
Messages of condolence may be left at www.GeorgiaCremation.com. The Shields family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation, 1086 Hwy 54 West, Fayetteville.
