Jerry Scott “Jess” Morris Jr, age 61, of Dunwoody, Georgia, passed away on August 30, 2024. Jess had struggled for several years with heart and kidney disease, and diabetes. He is finally at peace in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior.
Jess was born on August 13, 1963, at Wiesbaden Air Force Base Hospital, Wiesbaden, Hessen, Germany where his parents Jerry Scott Morris Sr and Pamela Anne Morris were serving in the United States Air Force at Rhein-Main Air Force Base, Frankfort, Germany.
Jess was preceded in death by his loving brother, Jeffrey Todd Morris.
He is survived by his parents Jerry S. and Pamela A. Morris, Dunwoody, Georgia; his loving daughter Brittany Morris Bevers and son-in-law Terry J Bevers; grandchildren, Bryanna Bevers, Terry James Bevers, Cayden James Bevers, Winder, Georgia; sister-in-law, Caroline Snow Morris, Cumming, Georgia; nephews, Jeffrey Tyler Morris, Dunwoody, Georgia, and Ryan Scott Morris, Norwalk, Connecticut; and his dear friend, Dale Hopfer, Braselton, Georgia.
Jess graduated from Peachtree High School in 1981, where he played on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. In his senior year, Peachtree played in the finals in the State Football Championship game. Jess also played on the North Georgia All-Stars baseball team, which won the state championship. He attended Jacksonville State University for one year and played on the JSU football team.
He served in the United States Navy from July 28, 1986, until honorably discharged on May 10, 1996. He completed basic training at the Navy Training Center, in Orlando, Florida, and received training in electronics at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, North Chicago, Illinois. With his specialty in electronics, he serviced Nuclear Submarines, in Groton, Connecticut, and Charleston, South Carolina. His civilian work included Electronic Engineering in Voice and Video data transmission for Scientific Atlanta, Cox Communications, and Time Warner Cable.
Jess was baptized at Springdale United Methodist Church, Warren, New Jersey. Churched at Asbury United Methodist Church, Villa Park, Illinois, and Kingswood United Methodist Church, Dunwoody Georgia. He participated in Youth Programs and Mission Projects at Asbury and Kingswood. Jess loved being involved in teaching and leading youth in sports and fishing. He helped coach youth football and basketball in the Braselton community.
Jess loved animals and birds, and especially loved fishing. As a teenager, he worked at a pet store. We never knew what he would bring home next. It’s been said that if several guys were standing around talking if a dog walked up, it would go directly to Jess.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Jess’ life will be held at Kingswood UMC, 4896 N Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338 on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 2:00 pm with Pastor Dana Everhart presiding. Internment of his ashes will be at National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia that will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and care teams at Northeast Georgia Hospitals, at Gainesville, Georgia, and Braselton, Georgia, and Emory at Saint Joseph Hospital, Dunwoody, Georgia.
