Joel (Jay) Douglas Shields, 81, of Hampton, passed away June 11, 2017.
Jay was born in Oklahoma City, OK on January 13, 1936. He worked many jobs during his lifetime, and loved to list them for anyone: worked on oil rigs, at a soda fountain, basketball referee, plumber, electrician, high school English teacher, Division Manager for the Social Security Administration and Internal Revenue Service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS. Raised in Kansas and Oklahoma, he also lived many years in California, Hawaii and Nevada, where he practiced his golf at every opportunity.
He had a great sense of humor, and was a “jack of all trades”, never hesitating to take on any project. He loved hunting pheasant with his father and brother, and was known for his accuracy. He was an accomplished speaker, always projecting confidence and humor. He loved his pets, and always had a dog or cat(s) in the house.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Joel (Joe) and Bessie Shields; sister: Mary Ellen Sparks.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years: Pamela; son and daughter-in-law: Brett and Terri Shields of Phoenix, AZ; daughter and son-in-law: Tammy and Billy Jacob of Santee, CA; grandsons: Brett Shields, Jr., Shane Shields, Christian Levi Jacob; granddaughter: Danielle Jacob; great-granddaughter: Harper Lee Jacob; brother and sister-in-law: Russell Bradley and Christie Jo Shields; nieces: Whitney Austin Shields and Patricia Nicole Shields of Kingfisher, OK, Jackie Warman (Ben) of Oklahoma City, OK, Sheila Eileen Shields of Texas; and nephew: Christopher Bradley Shields of Kingfisher, OK. Bob and Peg Brooks says
Pam,
Bob and I were just recalling memories of he and Jay playing with the blockers. Bob will never forget the day Jay’s ball landed in the hazard on #4 and as Bob went to pull it out, Jay spotted a cotton mouth snake. Needless to say, they left the ball in a hurry. They had some good times and we always enjoyed hearing his life stories-the interesting jobs and neat places you and he lived. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. We pray that God’s gift of time will allow you time to grieve, time to reflect on the happy memories you’ve shared, and time to heal your broken heart.
Wishing you comfort in Christ,
Bob and Peg

I truly loved this man, and I am so grateful for the time that he was part of my life as my Father in Law. He always had a great story to tell and truly enjoyed bringing laughter into our lives. We shared a passion for silly gadgets and I loved watching him smile when I would greet him with a kiss on the cheek and say hello handsome! He had an undying love for his family and I know he will continue to watch over us all. Pam we love you and are here for you.

My brother-in-law, Jay, is sorely missed by me and my wife Christie. One of the kindest, gentlest, and sensible men I have known who joined our family by marriage to sister Pam. We were privileged to have had him as part of our lives for 35 years. Such an impressive life he lived. We love you, Pam, and are here for you.
