Larry Guy Powell was born on March 5, 1947 to the late Flora and William Powell in Crenshaw County, Alabama. He entered his forever home on October 12, 2024. He was a resident in Columbus, GA.
Larry spent his days playing and meeting new friends through Words with Friends. He loved nothing more than filling his schedule full of activities with his grandchildren and just loving on them every moment that time would allow. Saturdays were spent yelling ROLL TIDE, determining his mood for the rest of the day. Larry was a proud Navy Seabees who served two tours in Vietnam. He loved his retirement breakfasts where he got to chat with all of his fellow retirees from Fort Benning. He retired DoD in 2018. There was never a place that Larry went that he didn’t gain a friend along the way. If you were a friend to him, he was an even better friend to you. Life will never be the same without the precious soul that he was on this earth.
He is survived by his wife, Scottie, son, Christopher (Kerry) Dunn and their children Charlie and Jasper, daughter, Brittanie Dunn with children Wyatt and Gabriel, son, Shepherd (Kristen) Dunn with children, Gracie, Parker, Malachi, and Tatum, and daughter Laramie (Wes) Jones with children, Piper, Aven, Sadie, Brewton, Mazie, Saban, and Lula and sister, Joan Vickery as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Flora and William Powell, brother, Louis Powell, sister, Sandra Parker, sister Joyce Kendrick, and in-laws, Ruby and Bud Mclamb.

My dear friend Larry , we had many laughs while working the check points and later on at the ranges. I still remember the day I asked for plumbing advice and you laughed at me .. lol but you will forever be remembered as the one person we could always rely on and those fatherly hugs. May you rest in peace my friend .

Larry was a joy to be around. The best boss I ever had. He worked in all kinds of weather and severe conditions. He was truly a leader and first on to dive in on any project. With the wonderful heart he looked after everyone and made sure that you done your part. He understood that you didn’t always have a good day and family came first. Larry could fix, rig and make things work no matter the circumstances. Larry could write better than any lawyer and do math better than I have ever seen. Larry was a wise man and had a heart of gold. Spending days with Larry for decades was a blessing. I spent more time Working with Larry than I did home and we were like brothers. Cold, heat, rain, holidays, nights and days he took care of the soldiers and their families and the mission of Ft. Benning, he was first on deck. Larry would speak his mind to you and ask forgiveness to you later if he offended you. Larry had no enemies because his loved everyone and wanted everyone to love each other. Larry dearly loved All of his family . I could go on and on but if you knew Larry, you knew a Great man. I thank our Heavenly Father for making our paths cross on this earth.
Thank you Lord for placing Larry in all of our lives.
I pray the Holy Sprit gives all of us comfort.

I only knew Larry for a short time but boy he left a good impression. He definitely loved Scottie and his family. He would follow Scottie around when she walked and was there if she needed him, riding along on the golf cart! He had a smile that would make anybody smile and always made me feel welcome as a neighbor. The neighborhood will miss you!!!!!!!

My prayers go out to the family. Larry, as I would call him Mr. Powell. We had just spoke the last part of September. He and I were always playing word with friends on line. He would win or I would win and we would come back for a rematch.
You will truly be missed my friend.

He has always been my favorite Uncle. He loved my Mama. That’s all I ever needed to know. She used to fight his battles even though he was tough enough on his own.
