Mercedes Amarilla ‘Lalita’ Guani, Madame widow of The Ambassador of Uruguay, and a resident of Columbus, Georgia departed to be with our Lord on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, joining many angels in heaven.
Mrs. Guani was born on January 23, 1932 in Asuncion, Paraguay to Dr. Carlos Amarilla and Anne Eskolastic Schultze. She spent much of her childhood in Argentina. She attended the Irygoyen School of Medicine in Buenos Aires – Argentina, following in the footsteps of her father. From an early age, Mrs. Guani devoted herself to humanitarian and religious causes and organizations, to include Las Damas Salesianas. Her philanthropic work included child advocacy and efforts to improve quality-of-life for those less fortunate. On June 19, 1956 she married Ambassador Alberto A. Martins Guani. Together, they represented their nation with pride and with an exemplary spirit of service.
We are thankful for her love and the many valuable life lessons she bestowed upon our family, as well as her many friends across the globe. She lived a full and tremendously blessed life. Her soul will rest forever in love.
She is survived by her children, Rosie Quiroga and her husband Carlos of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ambassador Alberto Amarilla Guani of Berlin, Germany, Anna Lucinda Guani-Curran and husband John of Columbus, Georgia, sister Loren Margarita Badie and husband Hector of Buenos Aires, Argentina; (7) Seven Grandchildren Ezequiel P. Quiroga, G. William Handal and his partner Mark, Lorna Quiroga, Ignacio Handal and his wife Kelly, Samantha Quiroga, Oscar A. Handal and his partner John, and Megan A. Hamrick and her husband George; Great-grandchild Alexander P. Handal; and a host of extended loving family members and many caring friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia, 31909, in memory of Mrs. Mercedes Armarilla Guani for their compassionate and dedicated care.
Ceremonies in celebration of her life will be held in: Montevideo, Uruguay | Asuncion, Paraguay | Berlin, Germany | Key Largo, Florida – USA | Columbus, Georgia – USA.
A public Catholic Mass will be held in her honor on Saturday July 15, 2017 at 5:30pm EST at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, located at 1502 Broad Street in Phenix City, Alabama, USA.
