Michael Barnette, of Senoia, Georgia, passed away after a courageous journey through illness, surrounded by the love, prayers, and unwavering support of his family and friends. Born on November 2, 1954, Michael grew up in Sandtown, Georgia, and carried the stories of his childhood with him throughout his life — stories he shared generously, often with humor, nostalgia, and a gift for making others feel connected to him.

Michael was a graduate of Westwood High School in Atlanta (before it became Westlake High School) and later attended Georgia State University, where he continued nurturing his lifelong curiosity and love of learning. Michael poured imagination, kindness, and creativity into his work, leaving behind stories that reflected his gentle spirit and his belief in the wonder of the world.

Michael married the love of his life, Leisa Huey Barnette, on September 8, 1990. Their marriage was a testament to devotion, partnership, and shared strength. Throughout Michael’s illness, Leisa remained his constant advocate and companion, updating loved ones and ensuring he felt surrounded by care.

Michael touched countless lives — not only through his writing but through his passions, especially his deep knowledge of fossils and the natural world. His contributions to the Georgia’s Fossils Group were widely recognized, and many described his “fingerprints” as being woven into the southeastern fossil record itself.
