Michael Walter Reed

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Michael Walter Reed of Douglasville, GA passed away on the morning of June 20th, 2025.  He is survived by 1 sister, Natalie Reed, and his father, Gregg Reed.  He was very close with his mother who passed March 2019 and believed there was never a better person.  He spent nearly every summer with his extended family and said all his best memories in his life came from these summer adventures.

His fiancée called him Mikey as this reminded him of a younger time in his life where he was happy, healthy and carefree.  He was a father to her 2 children, Korben (15) & Lydia (19).  He had the same college roommate for all 4 years of undergrad, his best friend, Zach.

He graduated from UGA with a BS in Psychology and completed his Juris Doctorate at GSU.  During his law school experience, he interned with the Health Law Partnership, an educational partnership designed to promote public health through teaching and learning.  His legal career continued at several law firms until he became a solo practitioner through Reed Law Group.  He loved the law and could not resist fixing injustices, always chasing windmills.

His primary interest was storytelling and tinkering with his latest projects; home efficiency and repair, computer improvement endeavors, anything mechanical or electrical that allowed him to know how things work and have their maximum output at minimal effort. He always had a large following of woodland and domestic critters that enjoyed his conversational style as he raged against the universe.

His family and friends will have a celebration of life at his fiancée’s house in Douglasville on Saturday, June 21st.

Mike and I went to high school and college together. He was such an amazing friend. This obituary captures him beautifully. He was selfless, had a witty self-depricating humor, wise, and brilliant. If it wasn’t for Mike, I don’t think I would have ever passed high school physics or statistics labs in college. He was so patient. I can never look at a stout beer without hearing Mike call it a “bread sandwhich.” I still chuckle, remembering him tell his now funny story about square dancing in PE not, realizing he had 2 broken wrists. The fun chats, cabin trips, house parties, relationship advice, endless Bubba burgers, and so much more. The world lost an amazing person. The last time I saw Mike, he was talking about his plans to start his own law firm. It’s better sweet, but I’m happy to know that he accomplished that goal and found love through his fiance and children. RIP Mike. You’ll be missed.

I am heartbroken at the news of Michael’s passing. As such a curious young man, he was every science teacher’s dream student. I was so lucky to be teaching with his Mom when he started middle school. She taught his math and language arts classes, while I had him for science and social studies – the fun stuff. With my blessing, he independently completed his science fair project winning a first place at the school & county levels . His parents took him to UGA for the state fair, and even let him call me from Athens (before we all had cell phones) during spring break to tell me about his first place state ribbon. That was Michael. He did all the work, yet insisted on thanking me for helping him better understand the science content for his project. He helped me raise money for my teacher training trip to Mexico to see overwintering Monarch butterflies, He assembled new science kits and refurbished old ones. I was thrilled that he went to my beloved undergrad home UGA. After Susan died, I found a photo of them which he allowed me to share on social media. I learned that he appreciated the dry, sarcastic humor his Mom and I relied on to survive teaching middle school kids. I was thankful to get a glimpse of him as an adult …. Still just as thoughtful, curious, kind, & practical as in days gone by. What a blessing to have been his teacher.
My deepest sympathies go out to all of Michael’s family and friends.

What was unique about Mike is he had the right combination of mental toughness together with an open vulnerability to his close friends. His honesty and tell it like it is personality was distinct and refreshing, especially considering his vocation.

He was a realist, not expecting outcomes to match his feelings. We had multi-hour conversations which sometimes led to disagreement but he never was disagreeable. He was too intelligent to be overwrought because someone else didn’t share the same perspective.

We sometimes worked on a car together which often led to laughing about things not going as planned.

There was never a more generous soul or a more committed friend. If you needed something, he would move heaven and earth to help.

Above all else, he was one of the genuine good guys, and he will be missed.
