Patricia Godwin of Smiths Station, AL, passed away on 1/4/2023.
A Memorial Service Held at 2pm est on Sunday January 8, 2023 at Evangel Church in Columbus, GA
Our beautiful Mother, Patricia Crawford Godwin, was born 1952 and made her unexpected and heartbreaking heavenly flight home on Wednesday, January 8th, 2023, at 6:50am. Mom was the epitome of radiance and grace only unmatched by her true inner beauty and kindness. She had a passion to help others and went back to college at the age of 50 for a degree in social work from Auburn University followed by a master’s degree from the University of Alabama. Mom spent the remainder of her professional life as a hospice social worker selflessly helping patients and families in their most desperate time of need. As her children, we’ve heard countless stories of her compassion, service, support, and kindness and the impact she had on families lives as they were losing a loved one. She was most accurately described in the following quote “I can’t even express what Pat meant to my husband and me. The German word for her is ‘Alltäglicher Engel’ which means ‘everyday angel’. She didn’t stop helping people, even when it wasn’t asked of her. I will never forget her taking me to the facility to see my husband when he was so sick. It meant the world to me.” She will clearly be greatly missed.
Although Mom will be missed professionally, it doesn’t compare to how she’ll be missed by her family. Our mother’s servant heart instilled in us our love for animals, to fight for the underdog, and to always give to the under-resourced without agenda. Thanks to our mother, we understood even as children that you don’t need deep pockets or to be rich to help people in need, you need to have a heart. Mom would slip several sandwiches in our lunch boxes, pack our back-to-school bags with extra supplies, and send us to school with multiple field trip checks that we were instructed to discreetly give to children in need. The thought of a child going without broke her heart and she never wanted any acknowledgment. Her spirit lives on in how we’ve raised our own children and we are devasted that she was taken from us too soon.
She is survived by her three daughters: Ashleigh Pitzer (David), Lauren Arant (Jeffrey), Claudia Denson; Her four beloved grandchildren: William Carpenter, Claire Carpenter, Jeffrey Arant Jr. and Hunter Arant.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Charles and Audrey Crawford, and her husband, Edrick Godwin.
As a memorial to our mother, we ask that you be patient and kind in your everyday life. Take the time to listen to people, especially the elderly. Give without expectation or ego as real love begins where nothing is expected in return. There was nothing more incredible to our mother than making someone else’s life more beautiful and we ask that you honor her memory by doing the same.

I will never forget the kindness your mom showed me at a time when I really needed it. She helped me overcome hardships I thought I would never recover from. I will do my best to honor her memory every day. She made the world a better place and I am heartbroken that she was taken so soon.

I was so saddened to hear of Mrs. Pat’s passing. I have many memories of her sitting with families upon the passing of a loved one waiting on me to arrive during her time with Preferred Care Hospice. She was always dressed to impress and had such a kind demeanor. A true Southern Belle in my eyes.
We had many conversations over the last few years about her family and beloved grandchildren as well as just getting to know each other on a deeper level. She was kind to me every time we crossed paths. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to call Mrs. Pat a friend. Rest in peace Mrs. Pat and condolences to her beloved family.
