The Reverend John Douglas Garrett, better known as Brother John, completed the human part of this spiritual journey and went to be with Jesus this past Monday morning January 11, 2021 at 10:15AM in Columbus, Georgia. His wife Catherine ‘Cass’ Garrett survives him and was holding his hand and praying over him as he went. He is survived by his son John Kelson Garrett and his wife Amber and their daughter Kenedi; His daughter Anna Ladelle and her husband Joshua Ford. His parents, Bill & Mary Garrett are already with Jesus. We are blessed that his three sisters and their husbands are still with us – Patty & Jim Cobb, Debbie & Jimi Quinn and Beth & Jeff Carrico. There are inlaws and outlaws and exlaws, cousins and nephews and nieces, great nieces and a great-great nephew amongst the flock of people who called him Pastor and friend who stay behind to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. We can do no less to honor a man who laid down his life for others so that they too would have the hope of glory and eternal life with the LORD.
John was known as Doug in his early life as a graduate of Hardaway High School and an employee of Swift Textiles and Columbus Mills Inc. He married the love of his life and with Cass he had two wonderful children. He was the owner of Favors Express Courier, Inc. and was called to preach the gospel while attending Britt David Baptist Church in 1999. It was at that time the Lord told him he would be known as John for the remainder of his life, to shine light in the darkness and give hope to the brokenhearted through preaching and pastoring His people. He completed his Theology degree through the Online Bible College while he served as the associate pastor of DaySpring Community Church at its inception and then was named senior pastor in 2005. He was serving in that capacity until he passed.
There will be a time of memorial held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 2PM broadcast live on Facebook and a recording will be posted to the website later that day for all of you who want to take a minute wherever you are and remember Pastor John. His family is isolating at this time due to members still testing positive for COVID so although we would love to gather with any and all, we are not willing to risk your health for our comfort. In lieu of flowers that will fade, please consider donating funds to the Community Forward Initiative at DaySpring that was so bright in John’s vision for the future (dayspring-communitychurch.com on the website).
If you really want to honor John, go out into the world and tell somebody about Jesus that needs Him right now. Forgive a transgression. End a feud. Reach out to the lonely. Give a hand to someone who is struggling. Shine light into the darkness. EVERY life is eternal and EVERY life is precious. Feel free to contact us through the website if you need anything we can provide. Peace be yours in this time.

I met John in the 9th grade at Hardaway High School. John taught me so much about life. We had so much fun growing up. We worked at Swift Textiles together. Had so much fun on our Panama City trips. Water skiing with friends. There are so many fun memories. We played in an awesome praise and Worship band at Dayspring with Cass and Anna. I’m going to miss you my brother. You will always be in my heart. RIP I love you my Brother.

I am saddened by the loss of John, and will continue to miss him the rest of my days. He has been my sister’s one true love and thus my brother for over thirty years and I will keep his light on in my heart.
