It is with profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of my dear friend from high school, Robert Dodgen. He was one of the first friends I made at Fayette County high school in the fall of 1973 and, that friendship lead to a number of amazing adventures as we grew up. As our lives took different paths our contacts became more infrequent however, every time I saw or read about a GTO or Firebird, the memories of Robert came rushing back. Nancy, please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your husband. There are no words that I may offer to ease the pain of Roberts passing. May it be of some comfort to know that for those who knew Robert and were fortune to have made his friendship, we are all better people due to his presence in our lives.

Rest in Peace at the end of the road, Truck Driver.

I have in mind little more than fun stories about my time with Robert. I hate that his life was cut short. I am greatly saddened, and I grieve with Nancy and their kids at Roberts passing; and I am truly sorry for not staying in touch.
I met Robert, I think, in the fourth grade – it’s all a little fuzzy. He was a year older than me, and repeated the 3rd grade at Nelwyn’s urging. Robert was a brainiac who could look at a book and understand it. His mom had him held back because of his level of maturity (from a third grade perspective).
Robert grew up on Georgia Ave., and I grew up on Gwinnett Street in Fayetteville. A quick run through the woods and through County Extension Agent, Aubrey Varner’s back yard would connect us; and often it did. Robert and I slept-over at my or his house nearly every Friday night for many years. We “camped out” in my back yard, or his back yard or front yard (just feet from Georgia Ave.) almost as often as the weather would allow, prior to our 16th birthdays, when we reached legal driving age – it was no longer cool to do such things when we could drive.
I could fill volumes with stories of our escapades, most of which shouldn’t be shared in mixed company and certainly not here. It surprised us both that we made it beyond our teenage years. Mustangs, Firebirds, GTOs, Pontiac LeMans and Grand Prix became more our focus and modes of operation in our late teens and early twenties. It was great fun. I miss those days, but I suppose we all have to grow up at some point.
Robert, you are already missed by everyone who ever knew you. I know I certainly do.
