Robert Vann Baker was born May 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama to the late Vivian Morgan Tompkins and Robert Vaugh Baker. Robert was a military brat and was active in Military Brat Chat, a group that discussed growing up in a military home. He always had an appreciation for Art and Design, which led to him receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Auburn University. He was known as a beautiful artist and enjoyed working in the art and design industry. He owned and operated two companies, Design First and Elegant Book Designs, for over thirty years. When he was not working, he could often be found in his woodworking shop, where he created beautiful furniture and custom cabinets, until his health would not allow.

Thank you Vann for all you have done to give military brats a sense of belonging. Thank you also for all your your hard work on military brats right, to make it fair place for all military brats to grow up. I am grateful for our long friendship, will miss the military brat chats. Most of all will miss the unexpected long phone calls from you, made me feel like you were the big brother I never had. I know you are in a better place now, still watching over us. Praying that the end was peaceful, and praying for strength and peace for all involved. I miss you Vann, and I know you are missed by many more.

My condolences to Vann’s family. I had never met Vann personally but he was somebody who inspired me to write and, when I did, Vann would often write an encouraging word of advice and support. I will always remember his enthusiasm about his military brat days and his love of telling us fellow brats about his experiences and memories. In some ways I regarded Vann as my mentor and am truly saddened to hear of his passing.

Vann will be truly missed. The work he did for the two Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District websites was amazing. He helped us begin to change the perception of the Giwnnett Place area.
Unfortunately, one of the sites he created may be taken down as everything associated with the site is in Vann’s name and not the CID. If anyone knows who is handling his business affairs, please let me know.

I am learning of Vann’s passing only now as I was attempting to email him after a long break in our internet correspondence and chats at his web site. I am stunned by the news of Vann’s passing as I literally didn’t know he was ill. I don’t ever recall him mentioning an illness over the past several years.
Vann and I were both Frankfurt High School and Auburn University graduates and while our times at each location overlapped, we never met in Frankfurt or Auburn.
I’ll miss the small community that gathered at Vann’s internet site on Friday nights to chat.
My deepest condolences to Vann’s family and loved ones.
