Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Stewart James Smith, who also went by Stu and Jim, passed away on March 26, 2025, after an extended illness. He was 70. Jim was born on April 6, 1954, and raised in Port Huron, MI. He was the second of 4 children born to Jerry and Carol Smith. He had an older sister and two younger brothers. Jim graduated from Port Huron Northern High School in 1972. He then attended Lawrence Technical University in Southfield, MI, to study architecture. Jim met his future wife, Carmela Cini, in the early 1980s, and they were married until her passing in 2017. In 1991, Jim and Carmela moved to Redondo Beach, CA. He worked for George P. Johnson as an architect, beginning in 1986, until his retirement in 2018. Upon retirement, Jim decided to split his time between his hometown of Port Huron and Auburn, GA, where his sister and her family lived. He spent fall and winter in Georgia and would head up to Michigan for the spring and summer months.

Jim had many interests. He loved model trains and was in the process of building a train track at his house in Georgia. At one time, he had a collection of toys, all unopened. He enjoyed anything outdoors, especially fishing and camping. He went on fishing and camping trips with friends and usually tried to pick a new spot each time. Jim had a great sense of humor and was always up for goofing and joking around. He enjoyed music, with his favorite band of all time being Led Zeppelin. Jim was such a wonderful son, husband, and uncle. Everyone loved him!

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carmela Cini Smith, brothers, Steve Smith and Shawn Smith, and brother-in-law, Bob Gallagher. He is survived by his sister Ceci Gallagher, nieces and nephew Brandi (Tim) Vanderhoff, Amber Gallagher, Coastie Smith, and Keenan Smith. And his sister-in-law, Lee Smith. He also had two great-nieces, Nyah and Alana, and three great-nephews, Hudson, Lawson and Luke.

There will be a celebration of life in late July in Port Huron, MI. Send an email to aegalla@gmail.com for additional information.
