Thomas Luther Williams, born on November 21, 1943, passed away in Columbus, GA on March 28, 2025, at the age of 81.
Luther was a man of strong Christian faith and integrity. He was an active member of Trinity Church in Opelika, AL until his health declined. He prioritized God and family and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, patience, and seeing the best in others. His love and support for those around him will never be forgotten.
After graduating from Auburn University in 1966, Luther began his professional career in Finance. Much of his career was spent in Horn Lake, MS where he served as an Internal Auditor for Dover/Thyssen Krupp Elevator company. His career afforded him the opportunity to have traveled the entire US, taking in sites and attractions while performing his job. He retired and relocated to his hometown of Opelika, AL in 2008.
Luther (also known to his grandchildren as “Auburn Granddad”) enjoyed spending time with his family and attending Auburn University athletic events. Before and after retirement, he was a frequent supporter of Auburn football, softball and basketball. His love for Auburn was evident throughout his life and has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. Win or lose, Luther was always ready to roar “War Eagle”.
Luther had a big heart for all animals, but especially dogs. Something about dogs brought out the best in him. He genuinely loved all dogs and was quick to help neighbors with their pets when needed. Up until his death, Luther often spoke fondly of his cherished dog Winston that was a part of the family for over 12 years.
Luther is survived by his family, including his children Jim Williams (wife Jennifer) and Brian Williams (wife Anna); his sibling Anita Ann Hildebrandt (husband Bill); his grandchildren Ashley Taylor (husband Logan), James Williams (wife Alina), Emma Culpepper (husband Chase), and Owen Williams; his great-grandchildren Ryder Williams and Killian Williams; and his nieces Alesia Ann Hildebrandt and Sylvia Newman (husband Duane).

Mr. Luther was a great friend, and will be missed by all that knew him! I worked with Luther for a decade at ThyssenKrupp, both in Atlanta and later at the Memphis factory, where he was the critical man in getting the business profitable again.
Every time I see Auburn playing any sport, I always think of Mr. Luther!

Even though Mr. Luther was not our “Auburn Grandad,” we claimed him as that! We always enjoyed being with him and hearing his stories about family, football, and funny happenings. We have precious memories of him on Christmas mornings and other family holiday get-togethers. He always enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee and a sugar free chocolate dessert. ❤️ We are praying for you all during this difficult time. Much love, Mac, Shannon, Delaney, and Susannah
