VELMA “OMMI” DORSEY was born on August 31, 1937, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Allen and Addie West.
God blessed Velma with a long and fruitful life. She was raised in Montclair, New Jersey. Velma was educated in the public schools of Montclair until the family relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she graduated from Girls High.
Growing up in Montclair, she met and fell in love with the late George R. Dorsey and they were married on October 6, 1956. God blessed their union with two loving children, Kim Renee and Kevin Rodger, whom Velma adored.
For 25 years (1967-1992) Velma was employed by the state of New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities, as a clerical transcriptionist, where she enjoyed working as she assisted families and special needs children.
She accepted Christ at an early age and she joined Bright Hope Baptist Church in Montclair, where she was active in the Sunday School and B.Y.P.U. Velma later joined Grace U.A.M.E. Church with her parents. In the late 1990’s Velma joined New Hope Baptist Church in East Orange, New Jersey where she remained a member until her death. Velma was a woman of tremendous faith. She loved and worshipped God. She was very happy attending services at St. James UMC and more recently at Spirit of God Christian Church whenever her health permitted. Velma loved people, was always warm, and looked forward to spending time with family and friends. Everyone she knew was touched by her loving and caring spirit.
On April 19, 2017, after a long illness, Velma slipped away peacefully to be with the Lord. A great and compassionate friend, devoted mother/grandmother/godmother and a caring woman of God, she will be missed by all who shared her love for God, family, and friends.
She leaves many to cherish her loving memory: her daughter, Kim Blair (Steven Blair) of Johns Creek, GA, her son, Kevin Dorsey of Montclair, NJ, her grandchildren Whitney Blair (Chuck Hebron), Ryan Blair (Addie Blair), Christian Dorsey, Darius Dorsey, god-daughter Nichole Booker of Richmond, VA, her brother-in-law, Walter “Pete” Dorsey of Montclair, NJ and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and friends.
