William “Bill” Richard Hammel, Sr. of Phenix City, AL was born on July 27, 1947 in Altoona, PA the son of the late Hatty Pearl and Ivan Ray Hammel. He was an Auto Body Repairman and had many hobbies which included the outdoors hunting and fishing. Bill also loved woodworking and had built several homes. He loved Max Lucado books and watching the Old Westerns “Gunsmoke” and “Wagon Train” Bill was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church, Phenix City where he helped with the maintenance.
Bill is survived by his wife Karen E. Hammel of Phenix City, Alabama; children: Tammy (Raymond) Grier of Phenix City, Alabama; Kim ( Brian) Whetstone of Beford, Pennsylvania; William (Ella) Hammel, Jr. of Tyrone, Pennsylvania; and grandchildren Christopher Grier of Columbus, Georgia; Amber (Andrew) Johnson, Bedford, Pennsylvania; Amanda Fulton, Bedford, Pennsylvania; William R. (Brandi) Hammel, III, Huntington, PA; Sierra Hammel, Bedford, Pennsylvania; Heather Whetstone, Bedford, Pennsylvania; Hannah Whetstone, Bedford, Pennsylvania; Taylor Baker, Altona, Pennsylvania and D. J. Bookwalter, Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania; five great-grandchildren; six brothers and two sisters all of Pennsylvania; numerous extended family members and friends and special canine companions Tinker and Barney.
Memorial services for William R. Hammel, Sr. will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the New Testament Baptist Church 9650 Lee Road 240 Phenix City, Alabama with Pastor David Johnson and Rev. Mike Reaves officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations be made to the John B. Amos Cancer Center or Columbus Hospice.
