Lloyd Ashley Larsen
Born July 4, 1936 in Evanston, Illinois, only son of Hans Kristian and Thora Larsen. Lloyd went to be with his Lord on November 1, 2015.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Janet of 55 years; his three daughters, Amy Jo Hornsby and husband, Bob, Sara Lynn Pozzi and husband, Carl, and Andrea Lee Larsen; his grandchildren, Eric Hornsby and wife, Melissa, Bobby Hornsby and wife, Kristin, Patrick Pozzi and Courtney Pozzi; and five great grandchildren, Eric Hornsby, Sydney Hornsby, Elijah Hornsby, Reese Hornsby and Allie Hornsby.
Lloyd spent his entire adult life ministering to youth. He touched many thousands of lives, leading young people to a walk of faith with Jesus Christ, counseling the hurting, assisting the stricken, and bringing joy and love to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Lloyd was one of the finest clergymen God put on Earth, with skills and compassion in such perfect balance that all who needed the message of God’s grace were drawn to its power through Lloyd’s preaching. He was truly gifted and enjoyed sharing his gift every day, even in the final days of his life.
Lloyd graduated from New Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois in 1954 and received an Associate of Arts from North Park Junior College, Chicago, Illinois in 1956. Lloyd furthered his education and received his Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois in 1958; and received his Bachelor of Theology from North Park Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois in 1962. He concluded his education with a Doctorate of Ministry from Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri in 1989.
Lloyd’s career began as Pastor of First Covenant Church, Denver, Colorado (1960 – 1961). He also served as Associate Pastor of Salem Covenant Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1962 – 1966); Associate Pastor of Salem United Church of Christ in Tonawanda, New York (1966 – 1971); Area Director of Young Life Campaign in Buffalo New York (1971 – 1978); and Senior Pastor of University Congregational Church of Christ in Orlando, Florida (1978 – 2006). Other positions Lloyd held include Volunteer Leader/Advisor with Young Life Campaign in Orlando, Florida (1978 – 2006); Adjunct Faculty with University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida (1979 – 2006); Teach with Wildwood Christian Academy in Marble Hill, Georgia (2007 – 2010); and Trustee and Committee Member with Big Canoe Chapel in Big Canoe, Georgia (2008 – 2011).
Some of the achievements Lloyd was most proud of include Distinguished Service, Tonawanda Junior Chamber of Commerce, Tonawanda, NY, 1970; Meritous Service, Florida Conference United Church of Christ, Orlando, FL, 1988; and Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International, Orlando, FL, 1989.

I was sorry to hear about Lloyd’s illness and death. I have many pleasant memories of times with Lloyd and the rest of your family. My parents and husband all passed away within 11 months so I am still on my journey of grief. It can be overwhelming but does get easier. I will be praying for you.
Rev. Luis A. Perez says
Janet,
Zaida and I just want you to know we are with you in spirit during this time of loss. Both of us are comforted by God’s amazing love and the memories of a life well lived. Lloyd will forever be fondly remembered not only as a colleague in ministry but as my pastor, a friend, and a mentor. He was one of my most favorite preachers — what a masterful communicator! So inviting, gentle, to the point, and always transformational. My only regret is not having “stolen” a bunch of his magnificent sermons (big smile). Zaida and I send our love. Thank you for sharing your 55 years together with the many who loved him and love you.
Hugs to you!!!

I was saved through the help of Young Staff 42 years ago. And served to help YL ever since. What attracted me to YL was that something very special that I saw in each Staff Person. Lloyd Larsen had that “something very special.”

Janet, we share a big hole in our life, as I lost my love one this past February also after 55 year together. My short time with Lloyd was wonderful in our Small Group Breakfasts as well as being on the Chapel Men’s Fellowship committee together and enjoying his presence when ever we met. What a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather & great grandfather. Please call on me if there
is anything I can do to Help. Love and prayers, Dick Girdler

We are from Pastor Terry Hood’s church in Connecticut… the stories we have heard from both Terry and David fill our spirits with love and pride to celebrate the life of this blessing from God…. our prayers and love are with you and our thanks to God for all of his teachings.
May all you, his family be comforted and loved.

Our deepest sympathy to the family. Most people of our age group ( 50s ) knew him also as PL. Salem Church was a joy to be at during his tenure there. Alot of the older people didn’t care for his ” hip-ness ” with the younger crowd. But, he did make a difference. Again, very sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Janet and family,
It is with much fondness that I remember your husband and father with great admiration. He was a man that welcomed everyone and ministered to all. He had a wonderful ability to connect with those in need and help them feel safe and in God’s hands. Most of all, he was warm, caring and always ready to laugh. I am so sorry for your loss. May God comfort you at this time and help you to keep all of your special memories of Lloyd in your heart. He was someone that believed in a comforting and merciful Lord, may that comfort be with you now. Kathy and Don
Dale and Dorie Kent says
Dear Janet and family,
Dorie and I were saddened to receive the FL Conference notice about Lloyd. We pray that you are comforted by the many happy years you enjoyed together, and the loving support of your family and many friends.
We recall the numerous connections we enjoyed with you two at various FL Conference gatherings and events over the years as colleagues in ministry. So many of us have now reached that point in life when the memories of those very active and challenging times offer great satisfaction. I’m often mindful these days of the passage from Micah 6:8 that served as a guide to me throughout 50 years of ministry. I think they described Lloyd and you: ” …and what does the Lord require? … to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with God.”
Peace and love to you, Janet,
Dale and Dorie Kent

I met Lloyd briefly when I lived in Tonawanda, NY when I was 17. I was tapped to come and play some guitar with some friends at a Youth gathering in 1970 or 71, and though I wasn’t a believer at the time, it did impact me as one of those memories where the Lord moved in my life; albeit, much later.
I didn’t know that Lloyd had moved to Orlando and lived here a long time. I came to Orlando back in 1973 and though I didn’t meet up with Lloyd again, I did become a Christian and a Worship Pastor. I would say that Lloyd did impact my life in Jesus!
I pray blessing, peace, comfort and the Joy of knowing we will all be dancing and singing for the King in the most glorious place we will ever see…Heaven!
