December 12, 1946 – April 22, 2026
79 • Columbus, GA
Charlotte Jacobs Vogel of Columbus, GA, passed away Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, at the age of 79. She had moved to Columbus just nine months earlier to be with her daughter after losing her husband.
She was born on December 12, 1946, in Rome, GA, to Estelle Williams Jacobs and Jesse Porter Jacobs. She was the beloved wife of her Kindergarten Friend, High School Sweetheart and husband of 59 years, Vernon Leslie Vogel Jr. who preceded her in death in July 2025.
Charlotte grew up in Rockmart and graduated from Rockmart High School. She attended Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. After college, she went on to teach high school and college students Chemistry and Physics for 38 years. She was known as the traveling science teacher for Mercer University teaching at many of their satellite campuses for 20 years. Her most memorable experiences were those at Arlington and St. Pius X Catholic High School.
Charlotte loved nature, adventure and learning. Her favorite place to travel to was the beach and her preferred way to travel was without a full plan. When it came to learning she enjoyed learning about other people, as well as, about science, space and even language in her later years. Besides long conversations with her best friend, she could be found sewing, reading, or playing the piano. Honestly, there was nothing she couldn’t learn to do and do exceptionally.
Charlotte is survived by her children Stacey Coody (David) of Stone Mountain, GA; Les Vogel III (Neela) of Tucker, GA; and Kate Vogel (Mike) of Columbus, GA; her grandchildren Matthew Coody (Chaney) of Loganville, GA; Chandler Coody (Grace Caroline) of Stone Mountain, GA; Austin Coody (Sarah) of Tucker, GA; Liesel McCray of Columbus, GA; Les Vogel of Tucker, GA; Charlie Vogel of Tucker, GA; Fiona McCray of Columbus, GA; and Henry Vogel of Tucker, GA; her two sisters-in-law Becky Wheeler (PD) of Centre, Alabama; and Anna Hook (Neil) of Carrollton, GA; her adopted dad Jim West, her adopted children Chuck (Joy) West and David (Cathy) West; her adopted grandchildren Brittany (Bramblett) Day and Jaime (Mathew) Monroe; and her best friend in the entire world Dannette Cantrell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Leslie Vogel Jr., her father Jesse Porter Jacobs, and her mother Estelle Williams Jacobs of Rockmart, GA.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 4th, 2026, at 10:00am at The Church of the Holy Family Catholic Church of Columbus, GA., rosary at 9:30 am. The family will have a private interment that afternoon at Rosehill Cemetery in Rockmart, GA.

Having worked together for years at St. Pius X Catholic High School, Charlotte and I reconnected following her dear husband’s passing in July 2025. It was as if no time had passed because she was that kind of friend -so real, so open, honest, and kind. We talked and laughed for hours several times, including an in-person visit at a gathering of former St. Pius faculty in October. She was thrilled to be there, and fellow colleagues were happy to see her. I will always cherish my memories of her. RIP, Charlotte.
My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to her dear children and grandchildren. May God grant you peace and comfort in the difficult days and times ahead, and bless you abundantly. Know you are loved.

We had so many talks over the years- teenagers, deer, bunions!!. I was thrilled to reconnect with Charlotte at the recent SPX gathering in October and catch up. Much love to her family.

Mrs Vogel was fantastic. I have many happy memories of her, as she was both my Chem teacher and my homeroom teacher (and Les was a classmate). She didn’t put up with nonsense, but she had a heart of gold. While the news of her passing is so sad, just seeing her name made me smile. RIP.
Mark Van Zant ('95) says
Les, praying for peace and consolation for you, your family, and all those lives your Mom touched through the gift of her life. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
Matt Lammers says
Teaching with Charlotte for many years and spending many hours together in discussions and just being friends, I remember her with much love. Being that she loved so well and so many, eternity is a given – as Love is eternal. See ya sooner than later my friend! God bless all you wonderful Vogel family members, it was a very sweet treat getting to see her at the aforementioned October gathering of former collegues and friends.
Steve Spellman says
I was the principal at St. Pius X Catholic High School and had the privilege of working with Charlotte for many years. She was a teacher that possessed the two ingredients that all exemplary educators have in common: first, a mastery of their subject areas with the ability to transmit that knowledge to young people, and secondly, she possessed a true love for her students by caring enough about each student to ask them to give her their best effort. A true treasure and a teacher that I will always remember with the fondest of memories.
May God bless her and her entire family!
Lisa Thompson says
Mrs Vogel taught me at Rockmart High School. I’m a friend of Anna and Becky. Mrs Vogel was a great teacher. I loved being her student. She was a sweet lady that always met you with a smile outside of the schoolhouse.
Charlotte Smith-Harris says
My thoughts and prayers are with Charlotte and her wonderful family. I truly enjoyed getting to know her as a friend at St. Pius; she was always very kind, positive and upbeat. I found out what a terrific teacher she was when my daughter was in her class – Charlotte displayed great knowledge of her subject matter, as well as intense care about her students. May she rest in joy and love in the blessed Arms of our Loving Savior.
Fr. Don Kenny says
My Masses and prayers are with Charlotte and her family at this time. When I was Dean of Students in St. Pius (1986-1990) Charlotte was a great friend and supporter. As has been said she was a great and knowledgeable teacher and showed great care for her students. We continued our friendship through the years keeping in touch especially after Lesley died! In fact she was planning a trip to Ireland, which her daughter Kate may now make. We will meet again Charlotte! In the meantime may you rest in peace in God’s heavenly home.
