Obituary for Nancy Elizabeth Elgart

Formerly of Canastota, New York; Schenectady New York; Reading, Massachusetts; and San Antonio, Texas.
Nancy Elizabeth Elgart died peacefully at her place of residence, the Benton House, on January 14, 2017 in Johns Creek, Georgia at the age of 90.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ernest Lawrence Elgart; children, Susan Cameron, Portland, Maine; Robert White, Alpharetta, Georgia; Thomas White; Huntington, New York; Mark Elgart, Brookhaven, Georgia; Jonathan Elgart, Clearwater, Florida; and step-children Michael Elgart, Melrose, Massachusetts; Sandy Swain, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Scott Elgart, Melrose, Massachusetts, and Lisa Wilder, Strafford, New Hampshire. She is survived by one sibling, Rachel Farfaglia of Canastota, New York. Nancy is survived by 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Stephen White, San Antonio, Texas and one grandchild.
Nancy was born on May 26, 1926 in Niagara Falls, New York to Paul and Elizabeth Greiner. She graduated from Canastota High School, in Canastota, New York in 1943 and attended Cornell University. She married Ernest Lawrence Elgart on September 3, 1961.
She was a dedicated and supportive spouse, mother, grandmother, and friend who was always active and made significant contributions in every community she lived. In Reading, Massachusetts, she served on the School Committee for 13 years, including 9 years as Chairwoman, and served on the Winchester Hospital Board of Directors. She was very active in the Colonial Chorus Players and Quannapowitt Players, local community theatre groups still in operation today, helping direct and produce plays. She was an active volunteer and dedicated member of the Alpharetta YMCA. She received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the YMCA and the Alpharetta Rotary Club for her service and dedication. She was also the founder of the Knit Wits in Alpharetta, teaching women of all ages how to knit and crotchet. Nancy’s most enjoyable hobbies included bird watching, gardening and caring for nearby grandchildren.
She was just as dedicated to her professional career as she was to her community service. During her career she was a kindergarten bus driver; served as a special education teacher in a multi-handicap classroom; managed a local yarn and sweater shop in Reading, Massachusetts; and served as a legal assistant in San Antonio, Texas for nearly 20 years.
A memorial service is scheduled for January 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Addington Place of Johns Creek (formerly the Benton House) located at 5050 Kimball Bridge Road, Johns Creek, Georgia, with a reception to follow at the same location. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nancy’s life.
