In Loving Memory of Gloria Jean Hurban

April 26, 1953 – October 24, 2025

On Friday, October 24, 2025, our beloved Gloria Jean Hurban—known to most simply as Jean—peacefully completed her earthly journey surrounded by her family at Columbus Hospice. She was 72 years old.

Jean was born on April 26, 1953, in Leaksville, North Carolina (now Eden), to Theodore Ivan and Effie Lou Atkins Hurban. Her childhood was filled with love, laughter, and the values that would guide her throughout her life—kindness, determination, and compassion for others.

After graduating from Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus, Georgia, in 1972, Jean continued her education at Columbus College, where she earned a degree in Criminal Justice. She was always driven to make a difference, and she carried that same dedication into everything she did.

Jean was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Effie Hurban; her brother, Eric Hurban; several aunts and uncles; and her beloved fur babies—each one a special companion she rescued and adored.

She leaves behind a family who loved her beyond measure: her daughter Stephanie Hoover (Robby); her sons Kason Wilkins (Caitlyn) and Kory Wilkins (Tera); her precious grandchildren Danny Jury, Caden Wilkins, Kirsten Allen, and Hannah Wilkins; as well as one brother, two sisters, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Jean had a gentle soul and a generous heart. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, for finding humor in everyday life, and for giving unconditional love—to her family, her friends, and every animal that crossed her path. She was happiest surrounded by her loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and a good cup of coffee.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her best, in the kindness she showed, and in every rescued animal that finds a home because of the example she set.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s memory may be made to Columbus Hospice or Paws Animal Services, causes that reflect her compassion for both people and animals.

Georgia Cremation – Columbus assisted the family with the arrangements.

She will forever remain in our hearts .
As I stand beside the dancing brook , the water cascading over the rocks , I will hear her singing to me or maybe just humming a tune . She will look up at me, with her loving eyes and sweet smile , and say “ Hello … “or “ I Love U … “ just to let me know that she is OK . AND WE SMILE …
Special blessings to each of her family and friends at this time of tender hearts . Comfort each other , share the Joys of her life , be thankful to have known her .

Jean was a dear friend of 15+ years and briefly a neighbor but sure felt like we knew each other for more years than that. We shared our love for dachshunds, and she loved my humor as I did hers. She was honest and caring and thanked me for always having a friendly ear and shoulder to lean on when she needed to vent. It was an honor to be her friend, and I will forever miss her. To her family, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as well. May God and Jesus always be there for you and your times of need to give you their love and blessings.
