1953-2021
John Albert Tiller passed away April 26 at his home in Suwanee Georgia, after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 29, 1953 to Waldo and Joan Alexander Tiller who predecease him. John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia (Flaherty), daughters, Julia Shannon Tiller and Kathleen Strange (Adam), and cherished granddaughters, Amelia and Bridget Strange. He will be missed by brothers, Tommy Tiller (Missy) of Fayetteville Arkansas and Robert Tiller of Little Rock, as well as several nieces and nephews.
John received his undergraduate degree from Hendrix College, and his PhD in Mathematics from McMaster University in 1980. John’s lifelong interest in military history and strategic board games inspired him to create John Tiller Software in 1996. He was a developer of history-based computer games, and simulations used in military training and artificial intelligence.
John had many interests and became certified in sailing, ham radio operation and drone piloting in his later years. One of his proudest achievements was getting his commercial pilot’s license. He was a railroad train buff and enjoyed many great train/basketball trips with his cousin Pete Thomas. Pre-Covid, John and Pat enjoyed spending their summers near Bayfield, Ontario to escape the Southern summers. Above all, John loved spending time with his family.
In keeping with pandemic restrictions, no services are planned at this time. Cremation has already taken place as per John’s wishes. The family would appreciate any contributions to John’s favorite charities: Atlanta Food Bank, the Salvation Army or other charity of your choice.

When I first discovered John Tiller’s Battleground games at Talon Soft in the 1990s, I thought I had died and gone to wargame heaven. I will never forget “booting up” Battleground Waterloo. Mr. Tiller’s love of military history is evident in every game he produced. John Tiller had a profound influence on my life. I met him at Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College, in the early 80’s as part of a summer program for high school students. He was the instructor of a intensive computer science course. This mainly consisted of a language survey of sorts, where we were given problems to solve in a smattering of languages we had never seen before. I had an interest in computers beforehand, but this program, and John’s guiding hand in it was the sort of magical experience that changes lives, setting me off on a course of further study, a professional career, and my own effort to awaken interest in math and computer science in youth. I spent years looking for John, and was finally rewarded in 2014 after coming across an article about John Tiller Software. We corresponded, and I was able to say thank you.

I recall a few email exchanges we had about his Battleground series of games, particularly the American Civil War ones and the later East Front and West Front games. Mr Tiller had a second family, a family who loved to create, design or play games covering the history of conflict/war. It was not to glorify but to show just how even a small battle can change the lives of so many. This community of wargamers who played his games and those who worked with him or came to know him in other ways involving history, had a chance to see someone of vast talent willing to share his knowledge and time to so many.
I first heard the name John Tiller when I bought a wargame from Talonsoft. It showed amazing ingenuity, design, accuracy to the history, laid out nicely and showed dedication to making it as in-depth and accurate as possible. As he then published on HPS I continued to follow his legacy of some of the most accurate strategy/tactical wargames that have ever (and I mean ever – no one else has covered the battles, the locations, the period, etc like Mr. John Tiller did.) been made in the industry. He has set a standard that almost no developers of wargames have ever matched. He left us not just with studying war but also the history behind so many of these conflicts whether through a small group of combatants to major countries and get a generous history lesson but also learn the hard, sad facts of war.
When he moved onto his own company and website John Tiller Software I came following. He just continued to amaze me with his newer releases covering some battles you don’t ever learn about in everyday life or classrooms. Whether it was the Spanish Civil War or the Falklands conflict, you knew you were going to learn more about the conflicts than any other wargame publisher/developer.
When I fell on hard times and could no longer purchase his games after an exchange of e-mails, I was shocked and so surprised and grateful with his complimentary gift of the Squad Battles Falklands and of some of the battles that were fought by the Royal Marine Commandos, the basis of which the United States Marine Corps was founded on and I had the pleasure of earning my Eagle, Globe and Anchors but also serving with men and women who all just wanted to protect the country we live in. I never forgot his generosity and when I could get enough money purchase his titles as a thank you and paying forward his great deed.
Based on his amazing developer/publisher of wargames, his attention to detail must have made him an amazing person to know, to work with, and of course an amazing family man.
His games did not have any bias towards any side. He never published titles where he had a favorite side. He made sure his games represented both sides as accurately as all the historical documentation he could get his hands on or through those who worked or volunteered with him.
His announcement of now working with the US Military I thought what an amazing opportunity for our military services to have someone help design systems that would help in further developing the skills of the men and women who protect this country. His support of Wounded Warrior Project showed he understood the material he was writing and that unlike his games, real war had real people who came home with life altering injuries and he wanted to help those men and women with his generosity and kindness.
I am glad he had a loving family, daughters, wife, parents, brothers, grandchildren, those he worked with over his many decades, those that got to know him and many more. We all are in mourning with you now. We all have lost a very special person, whether we only knew him from his game development/publishing or had the opportunity to work and consult with him or the most important been a family member or relative to him.
The flags in my mind are at half mast. The games just won’t be the same knowing the man behind such informative and eye opening games will not be able to show us all he had thought about in his head but future projects and goals. His legacy will continue with those worked or consulted with him and his family. A proud legacy to be sure.
Right now in heaven I can see him meeting some of the people that he detailed in his games. Having them sit down and play out the very battle they were at and amazement at how he was able to recreate with such detail and accuracy what they actually lived through or commanded. He will be sharing history and alternate histories with them that he will have a great following in heaven as well, not just those whose war strategies he put into a game but for those who like history and those who feel he had so much more to offer in his family life that they will want to hear of his memories that now live in the hearts of those who loved him.
May God be with his family and relatives during this challenging period and that he may comfort the pain as he helps to bring up all the amazing memories of an amazing man. After all, his games were his career, but his family was his life.

My condolences to the family and friends of John Tiller. As I go through all the memorials and other tributes which I appreciate I find little to no mention of his contribution to AI. As a computer scientist I find that the AI work done by Tiller Software was par none. Whatever John contributed to the gaming world and AI was outstanding. Thank you.

While I did not know John personally I have corresponded with him several times over the years regarding his wonderful software creations, the topics of which we shared a great personal interest. I am sorry to learn that John has passed on. He will leave a place that no one else can fill. He takes the love of his family with him.

I used his exceptional products to understand military history better in my roles in historical services with the DoD Vietnam War Commemoration, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and the American Battle Monuments Commission. I will never forget gazing at the battlefields of the Marne 1914 and immediately recognizing the land forms from playing his games.
