January 12, 1943 – February 24, 2024
John Madison Wayne Monroe was affectionately known as Pete. Pete fought a long and courageous battle with COPD and was a fighter until the end when he decided he was ready to go home.
Madison was predeceased by his father and mother, Asberry and Grace Monroe, as well as a brother, James Monroe and sister, Ruth Lamb. He is survived by a brother, Albert Monroe and 6 nieces and nephews: Gary Lamb (Rose), Debbie Britt, Dianne McGaha (Don), Bonnie Chapman (Scott), Alan Lamb (Stephanie), Ellen Monroe, 10 great-nieces and nephews as well as many great-great nieces and nephews. Pete is also survived by his girlfriend, Fay Pickens, her daughter Pamela (Larry), 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their love and deep appreciation to Fay for all her love and care for Pete. Fay has been a true blessing and held an incredibly special place in Pete’s heart. Pete loved fast cars and had quite a few over the years. He was a Ford man most of his life except for a brief time in the sixties when a gold GTO caught his eye.
However, he quickly returned to his first love, Mustangs. At one time he and Alan were building 5 mustangs in the driveway. One mustang was good, two were better, three was great, four was even better, and five was-why not! He and Ruth used to tease one another about which one drove the fastest car.
Pete loved to garden, which was a life-long pursuit. Being raised as a farmer, he gardened all his life. Even when he was unable to have a large garden, he always had a few tomato plants. It just was not summer, until he had a tomato sandwich from a garden tomato. He also loved animals and had multiple bird feeders, which he enjoyed immensely. He also fed squirrels and put food out for the deer that visited his backyard. After Pete’s last dog passed on, he put food out for a feral cat named BW. BW decided he would start visiting Pete inside and allow Pete to pet him. Shortly, BW was sleeping at the foot of Pete’s bed.
Pete never had children of his own but loved all his nieces and nephews as well as Fay’s family. He was a father figure to Gary, Dianne, and Alan, stepping up when their father was no longer in the picture.
Services for Pete will be held on April 13, 2024 at 11 o’clock AM at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Buchanan, Georgia with Reverend Debbie Britt officiating.
