Margaret Jeanette George

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Margaret Jeanette George was born December 20, 1938 in McCullough, Alabama to the late Christine Biggs and James Everett Biggs. She married and became a mother at an early age. She raised her children in addition to serving her fellow ladies as a master beautician. She married MSG (Ret) Lesley “Les” Lavon George on May 10, 1974 until his passing February 13, 2018. She spent a lot of time caring for all the soldiers MSG George would invite over for Margaret’s home cooked meals. She treated them just as if they were her own, which gave a sense of comfort to many who had never been away from home until they joined the military. At the age of sixty, Ms. George went to work with Synovus in the call center where she spent the next 20 years employed until her health began to decline just before her late husband’s passing. Ms. George could be described as a little lady, but quite the firecracker. She was beloved by all that knew her and will always be known for her kind heart and sweet smile.

Margaret J. George, 80, passed away on December 31, 2018 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, MSG (Ret) Lesley Lavon George; son, Michael George; brother, Buford Biggs; and sister, Carolyn Faye Biggs Carpenter.

Survivors include her daughter, Carmen Lawton and her husband Roger Wheeler; son, Danny Hartley and his wife, Kay; brother, Harold (Lynn) Biggs; brother-in-laws, Larry (Dee) George, Charles (Theresa) George, and Allen (Nancy) George; four wonderful grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends.

A Graveside Service will be held 1:00 pm EST on Friday, January 18th, 2019 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her late husband, MSG (Ret) Les George.

In lieu of flowers, the family request for donations to Welcome Baptist Church c/o Rev. Bertha and Mike Everett, 70 Welcome Church Loop, Box Springs, Georgia 31801.

The George Family is being assisted by Georgia Cremation, 7500 Veterans Parkway, Suite A, Columbus, Georgia 31909, 706-577-0055. The family invites you to leave a condolence or share a fond memory of Ms. George below.

It was a blessing to work with Margaret all these years. She really made a lot of friends at work and set a wonderful example for everyone. Margaret was an encouragement to everyone that knew her and was known for her generosity, life knowledge and conversation. Margaret will truly be missed in the SCS call center she was a staple in our department and we will not be the same without her.

My dear friend, coworker, neighbor and confidante for over twenty years is already sorely missed. We shared life’s ups and downs. As we became older and could no longer shop for hours or drive up to Callaway Gardens just to walk around, we compensated by getting a rideing shopping cart at WalMart and we would race with a few bumper car moments. Margaret was ready to leave us but we weren’t ready to let her go.

Mrs. Margaret…. truly the best description for her… a little lady, but quite the firecracker. I had the pleasure of sitting beside her at work… and she was definitely a great conversationalist…. she shared many relatable stories and would make you laugh.. easily. To hear her speak with customers you’d think they had been friends for years…when she asked how you were doing, you knew she really wanted to know you’re doing ok, not just asking because it’s the nice thing to do… she was just an all around great human being…we sure do miss her here in SCS.

I had the honor of working with Mrs. Margaret for almost five years. She was always a hoot while being unabashedly herself, and we loved her for it. She never failed to make us laugh with her stories and interjections. Our customers loved her too and would request to speak with her regularly because she made them feel valued and welcome. That’s just the kind of person Mrs. Margaret was: a caregiver. Although I’m sad that she’s gone, I’m grateful to have had her in my life. Any time I think of her I always smile from the memories we shared. She will be truly missed.

Margaret was a dear friend of mine many years while we were raising our boys, Mason and her son Michael….we spent a lot of times taking those boys everywhere they desired to go. She was the strongest lady that I have ever met….she would tackle any challenge sent her way….I only found out about her death today and I am so sorry I did not know when she left us to be with Jesus…my condolences to the family that she loved dearly….I will miss her sweet spirit!!
