Shirley Ann Newsome Comer, 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Ellerslie, Georgia, on April 4, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Her daughter and granddaughter were by her side at the time of her passing.
She was born on August18, 1949, in Phenix City, Alabama, to Nelle and Henry Newsome.
Shirley was a devoted mother, Memaw and great-memaw. She is survived by her children: Kimberly (John) Boberg, Larry Griffin and Gaynelle Griffin. She was a proud Memaw to Hannah (Jeff) Miller, John (CJ) Colbert and Lily Griffin and a loving great-memaw to Gracie, Nova, Nora, Ava and a special great-grandson, Leland Colbert.
She is also survived by her siblings: sisters Juanita Underwood and Vickie Newsome and brother Shannon Newsome.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelle and Henry Newsome and her brothers, Tony Newsome and Henry Newsome, Jr.
Shirley attended Jordan High School in Columbus, Georgia. She worked at John Wesley Villas in Macon, Georgia and later at Walmart in Trion, Georgia.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—shopping at Goodwill, cooking for others and making sure everyone around her felt cared for. She was a member of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries and held a deep love for her faith. She also had a special love for Elvis Presley.
Shirley was known for her generous heart and selfless nature. She was always thinking of others before herself. Strong-willed, feisty and truly one of a kind, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
No public services will be held. A private family gathering was held at her home.
Georgia Cremation-Columbus is assisting the family with the arrangements.
