To get you started, here are a few facts about veteran benefits you may or may not know:
- All honorably discharged veterans and their spouses are entitled to a FREE burial at any one of 131 national cemeteries with available space
- These benefits are available eligible veterans and their spouses whether you choose a traditional funeral or cremation
- The free burial for eligible veterans includes all of the following (at no cost to the family):
o A cemetery lot
o Opening and closing of the grave
o Perpetual care
o A government headstone or marker
o A burial flag
o A Presidential Memorial Certificate
- Some veterans may also be eligible for burial allowances
- Cremated remains can be buried or inurned in national cemeteries with the same honors as casketed remains
- Burial benefits for spouses and dependents buried in a national cemetery include the following (at no cost to the family):
o Burial with the veteran
o Perpetual care
o Date of birth and death of spouse or dependent inscribed on the veteran’s headstone
o Burial even if the spouse or dependent dies before the veteran
