John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, to tell her the news of the United States declaring independence from Great Britain, predicting that July 2 would be the day that all Americans would commemorate this historic event. The very next year our Nation did celebrate its independence, but chose July 4th to as its day with parades, great bonfires and family gatherings of all kinds.
Today in 2013, we carry on that same tradition and have some really fantastic events scheduled to celebrate our independence. Here in Gwinnett, you can start the festivities on July 3rd with Duluth Celebrates America starting at 4pm at Scott Hudgens Park with music , food, family fun and fireworks; Sugar Hill, GA has 2013 Sparks In The Park; there is an Independence Day Celebration & Mother’s Finest Concert in Norcross, GA; and Lawrenceville celebrates with their Prelude To The 4th at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. Of course weather permitting, so check schedules before you head to any of these great events.
July 4, 2013 will be another day filled with events all over Atlanta. You may want to start the day with about 55,000 friends at one of the world’s largest races – the Peachtree Road Race that begins at Lenox Square and ends at Piedmont Park and don’t forget to return for the fireworks at Lenox Square. The Atlanta Braves are playing the Miami Marlins with fireworks after the ball game, if the rain can hold off or you can visit Centennial Olympic Park for some great fireworks. Stone Mountain is having Fantastic Fourth Celebration at the park and the City of Decatur is encouraging its residents to come out and enjoy their Pied Piper Parade and Fireworks display.
Anyone traveling may want to make a detour and visit 4th of July on Marietta Square, Callaway Gardens 4th of July, Six Flags Over Georgia Celebrates Independence or even catch some racing action at Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday Night Thunder and Fireworks. That still leaves plenty of events to enjoy right here in Gwinnett. The Mall of Georgia will celebrate their 11th Annual Fabulous Fourth Festivities, the G Braves are hosting the Charlotte Knights with post game fireworks or you may want to just kick back and relax at Lake Lanier Islands Fireworks display. Some of our military bases may have a “salute to the union” ceremony that usually occurs at noon on the 4th of July.
